View Full Version : New Various Artists behaviour

I'm playing around with the new Various Artists behaviour at the moment and trying to make up my mind whether I like it. Quite often, I want to play a particular artist out of the artists that I like enough to have bought their albums. In this case, the new behaviour of excluding artists that are only on compilations is great as Browse Artists isn't so cluttered. However, one of the great bonuses of the SlimServer is being able to "discover" all the different artists that have previously been hidden away in compilation albums. With the new behaviour, this is completely lost, which seems a shame. A nice solution to this would be to have two items under Browse Music: Browse Album Artists and Browse All Artists. Does anyone else agree, or is it just me?

Something I've just noticed, which must be a bug is that pressing any letter when in Browse Artists takes me straight to All Albums rather than to the artists beginning with that letter.

I'll leave the UI decision up to Dean.

However, you can toggle the view by using 'Show Composers, etc' in the
Settings -> Behavior menu.

Is this in the webUI?

I haven't yet tried the new VA code (but THANKYOU THANKYOU to Dan for writing it!), but I agree 100%. A way to browse all artists would be good. Apologies if this was already covered in the annoucement thread, but search still goes against all artists right?

I would agree except that it's not working for me like it's working
for you. I have the same big ol' artist list with one addition
"various artists". Are you saying that for you artists who are in the
artists lists solely because they contribute partially to a
multi-artist album do NOT show up in your artist list still? As it
stands now for me I am able to get to any various artist album tracks
in two ways -- once using the specific artist and once using the
various artist entry.

I have "Automatically Identify Various Artist Albums" selected along
with "Don't include composer, band or orchestra in artists".

I filed bug 1921 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1921) on
this issue. If you're telling me it works fine for you maybe I should
try wiping my prefs or something. I've done a database clear/rescan
of course.

No, the player UI.

I have no albums by Blur, but do have compilation albums including tracks by Blur. Blur are no longer included in the Browse Artists list, but can be found by searching artists for Blur. I do have a Various Artists item in Browse Artists, which lists all the various artist albums (funnily enough). I had to do a full clear database and rescan at roughly the same time as getting the revision with this feature in as a separate bug caused SlimServer to crash if I just did a rescan. I have not cleared my prefs in months. I too have "Automatically Identify Various Artist Albums" selected along
with "Don't include composer, band or orchestra in artists".

If this behaviour is intended then I strongly suggest that Automatically Identify Various Artist Albums should be disabled by default. One of the great advantages of SlimServer is the way it lets you discover artists in your music collection that you never knew you had. My previous suggestion of Browse Album Artists and Browse All Artists would, obviously, only be useful if the feature is enabled.

I've added a comment to http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1921 and added myself to the cc list. As ever though, I suspect my comment should really entail the creation of at least two other bugs. :-)

This might be a result of optimisations that only fetch ID's in the browse modes. numberscroll works on a sorted alphabetical list.

Yes- you can't jump to say your artists starting with 'L' anymore - it
just goes to "All Albums" , likewise 'Browse Albums' jumps to 'All songs'

KDF - are you saying this is 'one or the other' type scenario? It's
quite a feature to lose. However my searches which previously took 15
minutes and killed all players now complete in 5 seconds :-) WOW -
great job Dan who I think optimised this :-) I am hoping we can get
both features at once as in the Browse listings everything is
alphabetically listed using the up/down arrow keys, Just the num keys
dont jump ....

I was only saying exactly what I said. Since I'm always updating, I
was aware of it working one day and not another. Narrowing down a
point in time was all I was implying. Dan has since fixed the problem,
I believe.

Yes - it's been fixed in the August 7th build.

I've just updated to the latest revision, R3894, and am still getting the broken behaviour for albums, artists and genres - e.g. presssing j takes me straight to all albums.
