Missing something! Well, the way it is now, maybe you are not, since I
can't get it to run on port 80 unless is runs as root. If that is the way
I wanted it to end up, what you described would work.

The missing bit is that I want both my existing Apache server, and
SlimServer, to run on port 80. Unless there is a way to make Apache
forward a virtual server to SlimServer on a different port, they both have
to be listening to a different IP address. They can't share port 80. End
goal is to be able to use http://fileserver/ for the regular Apache
server, and http://slimserver/, not http://slimserver:9000/ for the
SlimServer.

I suppose if SlimServer had an Apache module, that would solve both
problems. Apache is able to open port 80 and then run as a non-root user,
and if it could pass on SlimServer requests, there would be no need for
the second IP address, and the server discovery would work again.

I'll have to dig into some docs and see how the players find the servers,
and see if a second IP address doesn't receive broadcasts, or something.

I think you're looking for a combination of the <Location> and <ProxyPass> directives.
