View Full Version : (Long) Pause between songs

I just got a SB2 and am running SlimServer 6.1.1. All my mp3's are CBR 192.

When I play an album, it takes about 2-4 minutes for the SB to play the next song. The first few times it happened (it happens all the time), I was pressing buttons on the remote. I noticed that, after the 2-4 minute pause, all the commands I pressed were sent to the SB.

Obviously, trying to skip to the next song on the album is out of the question.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I did read something in the Toubleshooting FAQ about SlimServer suddenly using a lot of CPU, but that doesn't seem to be my problem.

Thanks again.

That shouldn't happen! One question: Has SlimServer finished
scanning your music library? Is your computer going to sleep?

Yes, SlimServer has finished scanning (and I've set it to rescan during every night).

The computer is not asleep either.

Thanks anyway.

I have just upgraded to the last version of SlimServer (I had 5.X before the upgrade), and start/stop take between 2.5 & 3 min to become effective on my player. I have not measure "next" and "prev" but it seems to have similar issues.

I use windows Media player on my PC and it's on the same machine as my server. I played around with the buffering settings of MediaPlayer and it did not make any difference.

Before the upgrade I did not have this problem... The CPU is not busy (less than fluctuates between %4 and %8.), the scanning is complete, and my PC is definitely going to sleep (I am ;-) )

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Burc

Hm, this is really strange, haven't seen this at all.

What file format are these files?
Can you give a little more detail on what you are doing and what
exactly you see and here?

My files are almost all mp3's that are 192kbs.

All I do is Browse Music ... Browse Albums ...find an album and press Play.

The first song starts pretty quickly. Then there is the minutes-long pause until the next song starts. The SB2 doesn't respond during the pause. If, however, I press buttons on the remote, they seem to be "saved" and then executed once the SB2 recovers. If I don't press anything on the remote, the next song starts (but after the protracted pause).

Ok, thanks. What operating system are you running? Do you have any
firewall software installed?

XP Pro SP2
Zone Alarm Pro

Thanks very much for trying to help.

By the way, I obviously gave slim.exe permissions when the ZoneAlarm popups appeared. When I check the firewall, it says slim.exe is active and there are green checks in all the permission boxes.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2, most of my files are also mp3s... Re-reading the posts I realize that my problem might be somewhat different.

The behavior for me is of initial delay: when playing a whole album I dont have delays between songs, the just play one after the other. But the response to any action is delayed 2-3 min.

The stream and the interface seem to have a 2-3 min delay... I hope it is clear.

The log.txt file does not show anything I am guessing that the logging is not enable by default. Maybe I'll give it a try later today.

IMHO this is normal behaviour with any software player except softsqueeze:
they tend to fill the buffer as much as possible. Try using the
softsqueeze and please report whether you still encounter the same delays.

I believe I have found the source of my problem. It had to do with my improper implementation of a plug-in, iTunes Updater. I think SlimServer was having trouble updating the play counts in my iTunes database after playing a song because I had not set it up correctly. That's why I was getting the protracted delays between songs. I believe the problem is corrected since I removed the plug-in.

Thanks.

I acutally played around with the buffering (brought it down to 5 sec) it did not help. Also this was working fine with the previous version of SlimServer.

Everything works fine with SoftSqueeze... so it has probably something to do with the MediaPlayer after all (even though I tried to bring the buffering to 1 sec)

I'm a new user and I just downloaded and installed SlimServer and experienced this same thing. When I connect with Windows Media Player, it takes 2-3 minutes for my commands to be recognized by the player (I hit skip, then 2 or 3 minutes later Media Player skips to the next song, like it has buffered a ton of data. I also messed with the buffering, also to no avail). However if I use iTunes, my commands take place 3 or 4 seconds later. Works like a charm. Does anybody have a solution to this, or is it just Windows Media Player? I really need to get this to work with Media Player because my "clients" aren't smart enough to download other players and plugins. They will all be using Media Player. That part isn't going to change for me unfortunately. Any solutions would be much appreciated.

Hi Redbird, tryout Winamp2.x or 5.x - or Foobar2000 as Player ;-)
Defragment your Harddisks ;-)
