View Full Version : Q on 6.1.1

First of all, I have been away from this forum quite some time. I received announcement that 6.1 is official and I downloaded it. Some changes and I have questions. Sure, they may have been answered already and in that case I apologize for being too lazy. I truly appreciate your patience and kindness. Here goes:

1. Now the interface is IE (opens up from the being used IE, which is a bit annoying). Is there any way to go back to Slimserver interface?

2. Remote cannot forward to the next track. It repeats the now playing track.

3. Title display now shows file name with .flac extention.

4. Choosing some track (Browse Music Folder) only plays that particular song. In previous version, I could set whether to play the particular track only, or entire album.

That is about it for now. Are they "bug" and if so is it being worked on? Or am I missing something?

Again, please pardon my ignorance and laziness. Your help is quite appreciated...

SS 6.1.1, FW 15, files are all FLAC. Have 8000+ tracks.

it was always IE, just that it used to be a horribly crippled ancient version of
IE that sucked.

er...news to me.

also news to me. did you let it fully rescan?

the play album on selection was only applicable from the remote (according to
the description). Browse music folder was rewritten from ground up, with
MASSIVE improvements in speed, but with th drawback of a raw display, and no
ability (at this time) to play all from album. its on hold for later.

that's about all I can say, for now.

Not quite true, it opened in whatever version you had installed. So
the word "ancient" should be removed. :)

Can you post more details on this issue?

Can you post more details about how you got this on the display?

To avoid having to re-use an open IE browser window, just create a shortcut to the IE application itself with the slimserver URL as a command line arg. E.G. for me, the "target" entry in the short cut is:

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" http://mediasrv:9000/index.html?player=00:04:20:05:a0:8e

This way, you can open up a slimserver window without loosing your currently open browser window.

I extracted a slimserver icon from one of the windows executables months ago and I use that file in shortcut's icon entry so I get a shortcut that's easy to visually identify. I also put the shortcut into my "quick launch" section of the task bar so that it's convenient.

You can use the same approach if you are using FireFox.

-> I was using 6.0 or 6.1 branch (don't remember) nightly 5-13-2005. clicking SlimServer icon opened its original itnerface browser, NOT IE. Where did SS original browser go?
-->> gharris999, THANK YOU! It works. But I zm used to the older version which brings up SS original.

-> Fixed after I re-rescaned the entire library.

-> From display via remote, choose "Browse Music Folder" and browse, then it seems that it is just showing what are in the folders including file names and file extention. This was not like that before, I remember.

wow. in that case, I'm even more glad its gone. if it was the same, why was it
so pathetic at supporting features that would work in the full IE? totally
crazy.

The SlimServer tray application was apparently not working too well (still works fine for me here), so it is no longer supported and you won't find it in new versions.

Instead, you have to use a browser to visit http://localhost:9000, or copy the slimserver.exe from a previous release ;-)

Sort of. The old SlimServer.exe application has been retired. A new
SlimTray.exe has replaced it which is a proper tray application and
simply launches your web browser when activated.

SlimTray should appear as a Squeezebox icon in your system tray and
show a menu of choices, which include starting and stopping your
server as well as opening a web browser with the SlimServer interface
inside.

Does this explain the issues seen?

I don't think of it as a "proper" tray application. A proper application that sits in the tray should really be a full application that is available on demand. The slimtray app isn't really an app - it's a means to launch the app; not much more than a url shortcut.

It's like "WinAmp Agent" - it only sits there providing a means to launch the real thing.

It would be nice if there was an option in the installer to install the SlimTray app. Each time I upgrade the server, I have to remove it from the startup folder.

Technicallly it is a Service Helper App.

OK, OK, now I understand the original question No. 1. Thank you very much. I will get used to the IE interface for SS.
How about No. 3 and 4?

3. Title display now shows file name with .flac extention. Rephrase -> From display via remote, choose "Browse Music Folder" and browse, then it seems that it is just showing what are in the folders including file names and file extention. This was not like that before, I remember.

4. Choosing some track (Browse Music Folder) only plays that particular song. In previous version, I could set whether to play the particular track only, or entire album.
Rephrase -> I found where to set the parameter to play entire album (sorry!). It WAS set "entire album". When browsing music folder (note the issue No. 3 above), and choose particular song, then SB2 stops playing after one track. Interesting another observation here is: after a while, the display changes to "Now Playing" mode and then the track title shown on the display is "normal" meaning that it is NOT "file name.ext", AND remote's "forward" does not work. Reminds me of issue No.2 in my original post.

Thank you again!

That is correct. The old version used to take each file, and look it up in the
database, then parse each field to match the titleformat. This is an very slow
process, so for raw folder browsing, it is gone.

It was a remote control only feature, and since the server no longer parses any
information about the files (in order to produce quick output) the play all
feature cannot work.

The reason it switches to "Now Playing" is that this is the default screensaver
while music is playing. 30 seconds is the default timeout. When a file is
being played, the metadata is read and you get the usual friendly title format

This is intentional. They made Browse Music Folder really hideous in order to make it really fast. It is faster, but since it's also unusable to me now, I've had a net performance decrease, since I have to go through other browsing methods, which are slower than Browse Music Folder used to be.
