Hi, first post!

I just took delivery of my first SB2 today. Unfortunately, it was defective (nothing appeared on the screen, ever. UPS strikes again). It's replacement is already on the way (thank you Slimdevices C.S. and Kevin in Tech Support!)

While I am waiting for it, I was wondering what success folks have had coupling it to an upsampling DAC?

I'm currently looking at a few different models but first wanted to get your input.

The SB2 will be fed via gigabit ethernet from my homegrown 500GB server. It contains all of my CDs in FLAC format, which I ripped using EAC in secure mode. So the data is pristine, just want the sound to be as good as possible.

The Benchmark DAC1, April Music Stello DAC and the Bel Canto DAC2 are on my maybe list so far. Any other suggestions? Cost is a bit of an issue, so no mega-buck DACs like the Philips/Meitner.

Thanks, Jetlag

I love my Benchmark DAC-1, I've got a SB1g.

Depending on budget, things like Larvy Engineering 44-96 Blue Series
is also in the range, it is about $1400.
Lucid DA9624 is under a grand.

And of course, there are things like CraneSong Spider
and other mega buck professional studio gear.

You should make sure that the retailer will let you
return the gear, at these prices, and given that the SB2
is not bad, I wouldn't want to gamble.

The April Music Stello combined DAC/Head-amp (can't remember the model number) has had some stunning reviews and is probably worth an audition if you can track one down).

The Grace 902 headphone amp/DAC,
a upgrade of the 901, is also getting good reviews.
Its a little more expensive compared to the Benchmark

I've been playing around with a nice, used Perpetual P-3A I recently picked up. I've been really impressed with it but I haven't compared it to any of the other DACs mentioned.

Pat, your reply seems to suggest that the Lucid is somewhere near the same ballpark as the Benchmark. Have you compared the two, and are they fairly close? Or have I misinterpreted what you wrote? The reason I ask is that I tried the Lucid out a couple of years ago, and was not that impressed.

I have not compared them. I tossed it out mostly because its price
implies it is comparable to the others.

For now, I'm happy with what I have, and don't have cash burning a hole
in my pocket to drive gear lust.

Stereophile (I think) recently reviewed the Grace 902 and said it was
a little better than, and a little more expensive than, the Benchmark
DAC-1.

The Larvy get good marks in the pro-recording world, I've never seen a
review in an audiophile oriented world.

At these price points, I would insist on a trial purchase, or order two
with an agreement from the dealer that I could return one of them. Good
dealers will do that.

I ended up finding a great deal on a used Benchamrk DAC1 that was purchasd new in April of this year. The seller guaranteed me that it is in "new" condition.

It arrives on Wednesday.

I'll let you know the results once it is in my system.

I will be running:

server side decoding of my FLAC files >> gigabit ethernet >> SB2 >> single ended digital coax (a very nice one) >> DAC1 >> amp >> speakers

Can't wait!
