Just updeaed from 6.0.2 to 6.1b2, deleting the database file before
startin the server. After the rescan, most of my tracks with accented
characters are no longer showing up in the library. These tracks were all
visible in 6.0.2. Interestingly enough, some tracks are still showing up.

It looks like the Usability improvement "Unicode / Character set
updates, which fix file encoding that was causing SlimServer to skip files
with accented characters." has a bug.

OSX 10.3.9.

Allan - were all your files ripped on your OSX system? Are you using iTunes
or MusicMagic?

Hi Dan,

I would say about 2/3 of my library was ripped on my homebrew linux mp3
player, that was retired when I got my squeezebox. The remainder were
ripped with LAME or iTunes in OS X.

I use iTunes for tagging. Eveything should be ID3 v2.4 tagged.

Interestingly enough, if I browse artists, pick an atrtist with an
umlauted character in the name, and pick any album, no tracks show, but I
get the line "1 album with 13 songs by 1 artist". The track count is off
by the number of track naqmes that contain characters with umlauts. This
is all with the fishbone or default skins.

If I navigate way from this artist, and then back, the album that I
clicked up is no longer in the list. I rescanned with --d_info and
--d_scan turned on, and clkicking one of these artists adds many liines
to the long, notig dirty tiems and clearing files from the database.

I would be glad to send the log file, but it is currently 64 MB... I don't
know how much it would compress or how much is actually needed. Please let
me know.

Allan - can you also wipe & rescan your DB? I forgot to force an auto-wipe with this beta.

Thanks.

So I'm assuming that the filenames themselves have high-bit characters in them?

I'm going to take a guess and say that your Linux files were ripped with a
LC_CTYPE of iso-8859-1, and then transfered to the OSX system which stores
filenames as UTF-8. But no actual conversion happened.

Could you confirm this? What is your LC_CTYPE or LANG environment variable set to on your Linux box?

Thanks.

None of those make much sense.. Reverse Unicode maybe. But is that only operating on the tags, and not the filenames?

Well, you might try using that functionality - don't change the encoding of
the tags, but have iTunes rename the files. Try it with a small set first.

How do I load the zip version instead of the exe server version? The server version of 6.0.2 or 6.1b doesn't work correctly with special characters, but the zip version does. The exe version of 6.1b2 has the same problem.

What makes you think that? The latest nightly of the 6.1b2 exe installer should behave exactly the same as the latest nightly zip version. They'll contain identical versions of all files.

If you really want to install the zip you usually have to extract it to a temp directory because there's a root directory in the zip file called "SlimServer for Windows". This directory will be created wherever you extract the zip file, but since you probably haven't installed to a directory with this name, then you should extract it to a temporary location.

Stop the SlimServer service, then go into the "SlimServer for Windows" and copy everything right over top of your current installation root directory (probably C:\Program Files\SlimServer). Then restart SlimServer.

I don't think it - I know it. Proved with 6.0.2 and 6.1. No reason or solution has been found. What's the SlimTray.exe file - it doesn't start the server?

Well then: what's the prove? What Jim was asking for is symptoms, error
messages, log entries... anything that could help find the problem. It's
really hard to find a "reason and solution" if we don't know what's wrong.

All that detail was forwarded to Slim Devices tech weeks ago. No update, just "we're working on it". Until then I'll stay with the 6.0.2 zip version that is trouble free - that is until a better mousetrap comes along and I can ditch this on eBay. A wonderful concept poorly executed. I never realized a $250 purchasing decision would lead to so much screen time with my computer trying to fix bugs - never again.

why not share the logs? Since this thing is open source, others may help (they
are clearly wanting to try). It has much better odds of solving your problem

it does ignore, wont unignore.
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1475

look for messages like this in the d_itunes log:
2005-07-12 09:26:40.7192 iTunes: deleting disabled track
file:///D:/mp3/CROSBY%20STILLS%20&%20NASH%20-%20Suite,%20Judy%20Blue%20Eyes.mp3

That is from the latest nightly, track is then gone from browse.

just to be safe, check your prefs. ignoring disabled is an option.

if you see something different, feel produce logs, and attach to the above bug
report, since it was originally in rehard to disabled tracks not being ignored
properly. It was renamed after fixing that part, becuase iTunes doesn't update
the mtime on re-enabled tracks, so the slimserver scan doesn't pick it up (yet)

I guess I haven't made myself clear - I am spending no more time troubleshooting this thing and posting logs and trying to understand fixes that only code guru's with serious amounts of free time can interpret. mtime?? rehard?? I just want to stream music. I stand by my statement that 6.1b2 and server versions of 6.0.2 and 6.1b don't recognize unchecked songs in iTunes and have library issues with special characters. I just recovered the June 10 nightly zip of 6.0.2 operating from my desktop and it works perfectly. Here I'll stay until a bug free update is available.

Your help and that of others is valued and appreciated. I have just reached a threshold of frustration where I don't want to continue any longer. After two months of struggle I consider I have given it a fair shot. Please remember, there are those of us that don't know perl or linux or redhat, how to use the debugging logs or what mtime means. understandable, but at the same time, it is impossible to fix something that
does not happen on a developer's system without those logs. When you first
mentioned earlier that the iTunes scan was not handling the disabled tracks
properly, I disabled a few tracks and ran a scan. This worked, so I have no
idea what the problem is, so cannot fix. If you have refused to spend any more
time, then quite simply, I can do nothing more. If you are happy with 6.0.2,
that is really great. Honestly, I'm really pleased to hear that. If only
everyone had 6.0.2 working perfectly.

My apologies for being confusing about mtime. It simply means, modification
time. In order to please the users who expressed frustration over what they
percieved to be overly long iTunes scan times, the server only deals with
tracks that have changed. Since iTunes doesn't seem to consider marking a
track disabled as a change, the server can only disable.

Unfortunately, I am not actually one of those people with far too much free
time. If you do feel like giving the details on your prefs for ignored tracks,
and snips of the log, that would be most helpful. Having looked at this a bit
over lunch, it looks like the logic maybe backward, 'ignoredisabled' becoming a
bit of a double-negative. I'll try a few tests, and will fix it tonight.

I realise this is only a small part of the issues you are having, but every
little bit helps.

OK - I give it one last shot. There are two issues to wrestle with;

1 - multiple song listings or empty directories created by the use of special characters, Beyoncé, Bublé, José for example

2 - slim server seeing all songs in iTunes whether they are checked or unchecked, even with cache wiped or .xml directory erased

Both have been an issue with all versions of the .exe server for me. June 10 nightly 6.0.2 zip is trouble free. The files may be the same, but the behaviour is different. Logged and noted by slimdevices tech support.

What logs do you want to see and how do I get them?

One thing I just noticed - the nightly said 6.0.2 and so do the release notes, but the version shown in SlimServer is 6.1.0. Firmaware is 13.

this kind of thing would be shown using d_info logs. If you have mutilpe
sources for your library (audio dir, itunes, moodlogic, musicmagic) try picking
just one and rescanning. The idea is the isolate which source is the problem.
Also, check your playlists. There was an issue fixed just recently that should
help deal with character encodings in playlists. This issue is horribly
complicated, with so many combinations of sources, languages and user setups.

I can only guess at this one, but I suppose its possible that something is set
wrong during the install, that doesn't happen if you are just extracting and
running.

> What logs do you want to see and how do I get them?

d_itunes for the logging on ignored tracks. However, I am fairly certain at
this point that the logic is indeed inverted. I expect that if you now set your
prefs to "ignore songs unchecked in iTunes" and if you then select "do not use
iTunes", change, then select "use iTunes", change, that your unchecked songs
will disappear as desired. Doing the don't use/use, trick causes a rescan of
ONLY iTunes (in case you have other sources enabled). If you manage to try
this and can confirm the result, I'll be sure to merge in the fix for the July
13 build.

That must be something in the windows build. I use the raw tar.gz, so I'm seeing
6.1b2....

Firmware, I believe, is at 14 now, but that shouldn't be critical for either of
these issues.

oiler1fan,

I have fixed the logic for the disable itunes track setting. if you
upgrade to the July 13 nightly build, then your unchecked tracks should
be properly removed from the library on a rescan. If your pref is
already set to 'don't ignore' then you will not have to change a thing.

I am downloading that nightly version now. The version I was using and the new update doesn't have the "use iTunes" option in Server Settings as it should....??

The use iTunes option should appear when/if an iTunes xml library has been
found. One thing you can do is go into server settings, plugins. disable
itunes, click change, enable itunes. This sometimes helps, since it forces the
server to check again.

could this maybe be the source of the whole problem? if SS can't find
the iTunes library XML, then how could it recognize disabled state flags
in the XML? maybe the SS database is just all-around stale.

and how about temporarily moving the prefs file (with the server stopped) and
starting the server again. I believe the location on windows is:
c:\program files\slimserver\server\slimserver.pref

The setting of location manually should really only be needed for linux users or
those who have some reason to have copied their itunes library from somewhere
else. Setting for manual also bypasses any attempts to find the library
automatically, so it MUST be perfect, or you get what you see.

server settings->debugging, d_itunes
http://serverIP:9000/log.txt will also let you see the results of trying to find
the library. again, disable itunes (click change), enable itunes (click change)
to trigger another attempt to find.

I'm a bit off balance on this one, since I've never had any problems with the
server finding itunes automatically on windows.

not unexpected. July 11 will be reversed. Selecting 'ignore' would actually
not ignore, while 'dont ignore' would. July 13 should work the proper way
around.

Please confirm that 6.1b2-3660 is the July 13 nightly. If so here's the issues;

- "ignore songs unchecked in iTunes" is working but in reverse

- artists with with special characters in their name are listed along with the album name, but the songs don't appear. Then after opening the artist's file the first time, the artist disappears from the browse list completely.

Latest nightly versions are built each night (hence "nightly") You should be able to download from:

I think you have the beta 2 version which was created last Friday and hence does not have kdf's most recent changes.

actually...this is probably confusing text, I think. If the track is marked
'disabled', and you ignore it, do you:
1) leave it (thereby actually ignoring the uncheck)
2) wipe it from the db becuase its disabled

I think what needs to be done is changing text.
The setting could perhaps be:
Removed Disabled iTunes Tracks
Remove unchecked tracks
Don't remove unchecked tracks

what do you think? Dean, are you also ok with that?

now that I actually HAVE one artist with special characters, I can start to
understand this stuff. I'm way behind on the whole unicode thing :)

So, let me understand the specifics, and if I can reproduce this, I wont have to
bug you any more ;)

- Is this web UI or player UI or both?
- This is browse albums listings, with 'showArtist' pref turned on, or is the
sartist name appearing as if it were part of the album name?
- descending via the album link, reveals no tracks?
- by artist file, do you mean the directory or just any track by that artist?

and finally, could you attach one of the tracks from this artist to the bug
report for:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1786

I can then be another pair of eyes for debug or testing any fixes that come up.
That will let you keep running with a stable 6.0.2 setup and let yoru family
and guests enjoy your music.

it should be 3677 or higher, but 3677 is definitely in the july 13 nightly. I'm
not sure exactly where/when the server grabs the 4-digit letter from.

I reloaded July 13 again from the website - it is 3660, unless the update is not overwriting the existing installation

Your choice - just as long as it works

To attach a file, there's a "Create a New Attachment" link somewhere in
the middle of the bug's description page.

There's a track with Cyrillic characters in its album title (which would
*probably* display the same behavior) attached to bug 1486.

I have just removed any special characters from artist or album names until a fix is posted. This way the library works 100% for now.

Another bug I have is that some songs don't play unless I manually select them, even though I have "play other songs in album or directory" selected. Could this be a problem with the actual source .wav file or a bug in SlimServer? - and how could I check? Latter Days Vol.2 Led Zeppelin is one example I played today.

d_command is probably the closest I can think of for looking at this. However, I
don't think that there is any solid way to watch the list for certain songs
that dont get included. Is this a single wav split by a cue sheet, perhaps?

All I can tell you is that I loaded all my DVD's using iTunes, so no, it would not be a single .wav file that has been split later. Here's an error log - you can see where I have to manually advance to the next song by the "jump_fwd" entry.

oh ok, so it IS adding to the playlist properly, just not advancing to the next
song? If that is the case, it sounds a lot like:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1595

It is marked as fixed, mostly due to lack of details from the original reporter.

d_source logs are good for looking at slong playback issues.

I have no idea how DVD files turn out when ripped by iTunes, so there could be
some strangeness in the WAV file that makes the server thing that playback
hasnt' finished in the track, in order to jump to the next.

If you have some reproducable details, please feel free to reopen that bug and
add the log info, and any other details you feel may be relevant.

I said DVD didn't I - slap me. All the songs and files in question are from CD's, normal rip with iTunes using wav encoder, error correction on.

ah ok :)
That kills off theory number one then. It will all come down to what d_source
says about what the server thinks is the right thing to be doing at then
end/start of tracks.

You aren't by any chance pausing for a few seconds on these tracks,
are you? The reason I ask is that I've seen a similar problem (easily
reproducible) for pretty much all of 6.0 where if I pause a track for
more than a few seconds and then hit play, when it hits the end of the
track it just stops and I have to hit play again to start things. I
don't know exactly how long I have to pause before it happens.

I've grown so used to it that I automatically hit play twice to avoid
it although this does restart the paused track from the start.

I wasn't able to find a bug for this but it happens all the time on my
SB2. Not sure if it happens on my SliMP3's too or not.

There seems to be a bug when adding all tracks in same folder from browse music
folder. its filed as bug1825

Hmm, seems a bit different as it doesn't involve pausing. Dan already
fixed that too.

And now I just had a pause going for about 10 min and hit play and
lo-and-behold it worked fine and continued to the next track. Maybe
it's been fixed for awhile and I've just been working around it
unnecessarily.... :-) Or maybe it's specific tracks that are at
issue. If I can duplicate it I'll file a bug on this issue.

Thanks,
Ben

Nope - not pausing during playback. Some albums play fine, some don't, no difference in the way the discs were ripped. All are .wav format, and stream is wav.
