Just to make sure that I understand this correctly...

When connected to SqueezeNetwork, a SqueezeBox will only be able to play audio streams in a format that is supported by the SB hardware (MP3, WAV and FLAC for SB2), right?

The role of your SqueezeNetwork server is to initiate the connection between my Squeezebox and the server streaming the audio. When the connection is established, the SqueezeNetwork server plays no role, right?

That is correct. The actual radio stream goes directly to your SB2 and
is not touched by the SqueezeNetwork server.

Which, unfortunately, is a major limitation. Ogg and wma streams are
not supported by SN. Vidur, do you have a twin brother to help
implement the new features ? :)

I can't see SlimDevices doing on the fly transcoding for you - that could pretty quickly lead to some fairly hefty hardware requirements at their end!

Transcoding? No, I was taking about adding Squeezebox2 built-in
support for OGG and WMA. It certainly can be done, but so far has not
been very high on Vidur's to do list.

The web interface has a go at parsing the data returned by MMS URLs - it picked up the real station name when it displayed it in the favorites.
At SB2 it shows the name that I gave the station.
In my case - it eventually converts into WMA - which cannot be handled at the SB2 with a message something like:
"WMA Convert error - check file types"

As expected - knowing that the device has no native support for it - but no doubt will be disappointing to some who wanted to have PC-less WMA or RAM - as in this thread on NNTP

I found a request for ogg support:

Bugzilla Bug 1061: Ogg Vorbis Support in Firmware:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1061

Why are we unable to vote? Now, when SN is on, this request deserves
more attention.

I could not locate anything regarding wma. Does a new request need to
be created?

Thanks,

Fixed. You should now be able to vote on Sqeezebox2 and SqueezeNetwork bugs.

Bugs 571 (http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=571) and 1503
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1503) are related, but
neither of them specifically asks for WMA support in Squeezebox2
firmware. Please file a new bug.

Thanks,

Thank you, Vidur.

Am I right in saying that the firmware coming with SS 6.2 (which adds native WMA decoding) will allow streaming of WMA radio sources over Squeezenetwork?

Yes, after the SqueezeNetwork is upgraded to support that new format.

any idea on timescales ?

No exact dates.

6.2 will ship sometime in the second half of October, the
SqueezeNetwork update will happen shortly thereafter.

great - sooner (ie Oct/Nov) rather than later ('sometime') is about as good an answer as I could hope for.. thanks.
