View Full Version : Biography as screensaver?

2005-05-12, 12:57
The biography plugin is one of my favorites since long. I use it a lot, but
it requires quite a bit button-pressing, since it still is an 'external'
plugin.

I'd like to see this one incorporated to use as a screensaver (just as the
RSS feeds can). Could this be possible in any way?

I guess one of the difficulties is that the screensaver should update in
sync with the tracks (so that a new biography is loaded at the start of a
new track), which is a bit agains the nature of a screensaver I guess. Maybe
there's some difficulty in this, but on the other hand the slimserver
programmers have solved bigger problems :-)

Could this be a feature request?

Another idea I heard from one of our investors was to put the
biography plugin information inside the song info menu...

I'm glad you like it. If you're already running slimserver 6.1 you might
like the AlbumReview, too.

What do you mean by "external plugin"? I almost never us it on the player.
I prefer having my PDA and reading it in the web interface. Pretty often
it can't even display all the biography at once.

> I'd like to see this one incorporated to use as a screensaver (just as

Technically yes. But I don't like ticker style reading - it's always too
fast or too slow, but never easy to read. Especially if it's more than
just a headline.

Not at all. Typically the "Now playing..." screensaver or my MusicInfoSCR
do exactly this: display information about the currently playing song.

And I think there are still some bigger problems to solve ;-). I'm sorry,
but I'm not so sure whether I'll soon try to do that screensaver part. But
I'll note it down for a rainy period...

You mean press right from the now playing screen? This might be feasible
(you, of course, know already how to do it :-)).

BTW: if your investor wants to invest in that plugin, you may give him my

Did I hear a mention of Biography for 6.1 recently? How does one go about
obtaining that version? Thanks in advance... - Mike

I think Dean may have meant putting biogroaphy as a menu item under
'song info' accessible from the web interface (for fishbone, the
capital 'I' on the far right of the a song in the playlist).

that would seem better than in Help. Another idea is to simply put it
in the drop-down menu along with 'browse artists, browse albums', etc.
That would certainly make it very accessible (I can imagine the
arguments for not doing so -- contention over what plugins get to go
there....). .

Another suggestion: How about next to Player Settings at the top of
the right side pane in fishbone?

In anycase, it seems like a more accessible place than Help is
warranted -- as it is a very nice plugin

Actually, both places. I'd like the biography information to be
available anywhere you look at song info. Pressing RIGHT on the
remote when displaying the song title or clicking on a song title in
the web interface. This may need a bit of support in SlimServer
itself, but it shouldn't be too hard.

Looking forward to that. But in fact, I recently reverted from 6.1 to 6.03 only because I could't get the biography plugin to work (I only got the message no info could be found).

>What do you mean by "external plugin"? I almost never us it on the player.

I meant it is not 'integrated' in the original package, as the softsqueeze plugin for example.
Funny thing is I use it on the player a lot, only because that's where I'm sitting when the music plays. Ofcourse the server version is easier to read, and the photos are included there too, so when I'm at the server I use it..but mostly it's the player.

BTW - the song info (far right at the player), like Dean suggested, sounds like a good place to put it!

Technically yes. But I don't like ticker style reading - it's always too fast or too slow, but never easy to read. Especially if it's more than just a headline.

That's true, so I think the RSS-style reading is better for this (one line at a time, browsing with up /down). That is how I read the biography, in fact. I don't wait fot the ticker.

Thanks for contributing this plugin..as I said, I'm really looking forward to the album review!
I'm always pleasantly surprised to see even the more obscure artists showing up from allmusic.com.

Hmm... what was this? No plugin specific code in the main code? But

This would/will mean closer integration with the main code (as Dean
noted). I'll see what I can do.

So do I! I recently discovered some information about a German rock singer
(Herbert Grönemeyer) - allmusic gave him the "worldmusic" attribute...
German must be quite exotic to some american :-)

But on the other hand I was quite positively surprised to find information
even about some Swiss artists. And I'm not talking about the very big guys
like Yello, but about Stephan Eicher, who's most popular in Switzerland,
Germany and France.

To be clear, what I'd like is a way for plugins to be able to add
stuff to the Song Info screens. I'm not condoning Biography specific
code in SlimServer... :)

It's been quite a while since we discussed the possibilities of using the biography and/or the album review plugin as a screensaver. In fact, I still think this could be one of the best enhancements of the Squeezebox interface I can imagine.
When randomly playing my tracks, I find myself constantly pressing the menu buttons to see what AllMusic has to say about the artist / album.

Man, I'd even PAY for this enhancement! :-)

Ok, here you go. This is a first try - it might be pretty buggy. And you'll need 6.5 or trunk to run it:

- download and install the 6.5 version of the plugin from http://www.herger.net/AlbumReview

- replace the Plugin.pm with this version

- restart slimserver

You'll then have the AlbumReview in the player's Plugins section as well as in Screensavers. When run as screensaver it will display the content in one long line, scrolling along. It tries to keep in synch with new songs etc. thus blocking the display while downloading new reviews. You won't be able to wake up from the screensaver mode while the plugin is blocking, I'm sorry.

Give it a try and let me know if it's working for you.

Have fun!

While the former posting was for the AlbumReview, here's the Biography version. The installation follows the same procedure.

Any comment is welcome.

here you go: I just installed 6.5 (indeed works great now) and your plugins + followed instructions. This is great, just what I wanted & asked for!! Starting about 10 secs after the track starts I can read the biography or review text on my display. (Note: I only have played with it short, so I may report some bugs later. But it seems to work very fine until now)

The 'biography OR review' makes me want to ask for a small enhancement, if possible:
Since this plugin will only be used when playing, it's hard for me to choose between the biography or the album review. So I'd like to be able to choose between these options as a screensaver when playing:
- biography
- album review
- biography + album review
- album review + biography

Don't know how hard or impossible this is (since we're talking about TWO separate plugins).

Note this is only an enhancement request, I AM VERY PLEASED WITH WHAT IT DOES ALLREADY!!!

Depending on the length of the track one may not ever read all text, off course. I'm an ambient/electronics fan, so my tracks often last VERY long..and makes me want to read screens to prevent falling asleep :-)

Thanks!!

Michael,

Just started Biography as my 'now playing' screensaver in softsqueeze w/ transporter skin. Working fine so far - w/ bio in screen1 and now playing info in screen2. Did notice some screen flicker as the bio details scroll but this may be a function of ssqueeze??

Also, would you consider adding ->url to :song($client)) @ line 569 - this seems to get better results for internet streams that provide artist-title info

Great work - as always!

I think this is a SoftSqueeze issue: I first noticed it yesterday, after
the latest upgrade to it (see

I don't quite see how this should work: display bio first, than review (or
other way around)? Or display review once, than go to other screensaver?

That's what I had in mind, indeed. I've never seen the option to use TWO screensaver plugins loaded, so I guess it's difficult to do this.
Another thing came up: if possible: show only review or biography IF AVAILABLE, else just track details.
:-)

That's seems feasible. Don't expect it too soon: I'd first like to have

Michael,
you are a star!

Your plugins are phenominal. The scrolling screen saver functionality has made these two plugins my definite favourites. I'm exceptionally grateful you have added it. Lovely. Thanks.

One small thing. I installed them but did not do the Perl modules. On the Squeezebox screen I was promted with somehting along the lines of "You probably need to install some perl modules for this to work correctly. See documentation". Perfect!

Anyway, I decided to install Active Perl as this seemed to obviate the need for adding any further CPAN modules. However, the installation changed nothing so I installed your CPAN pack and all was fine.

Maybe I have to actively start Active Perl or something?

I'm glad you like that solution. It's imho a lot better than folks coming
back to the forums with the plugins crashing because they didn't read the

Hmm... I noticed that the module name I'm giving on my page does not exist
in ActivePerl's repository. I'll have to review that information. Thanks

Hi Michael,
Somewhere in this thread I'm sure you requested that anyone let you know if they experienced any bugs.. I can't find it now, but hope my memory serves me well.

I have recently had a problem with Slimserver stopping. Dan Sully is currently trying to diagnose it. I am becoming a little suspicious that it could be your screensaver plugin that's causing it. It's hard to test it though as does it so infrequently. Anyway I managed to trap the reported error when the thing froze and the thread is here if you have any interest: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=27478
The last post includes the error.
