Hi,
I decided to upgrade my old V5 Slimserver to the current version 6.0.2 on my Toshiba Magnia SG20 Server, but I'm running in some problems which I can't solve alone (I'm an German Linux Greenhorn).

The system is a Redhat Linux 7.3 one.

I've installed the RPM and was told, that I have problems with "storable" and took the advice to run:

> /usr/local/slimserver/Bin/build-perl-modules.pl

which I did, but my next challenge is to resolve the error on compiling the makefile:

Downloading DBI-1.46.tar.gz to: /root
Uncompressing..
Configuring..
/usr/bin/perl Makefile.PL
Can't locate Test/More.pm in @INC (@INC contains: lib /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.0 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.6.1/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl/5.6.1 /usr/lib/perl5/vendor_perl .) at Makefile.PL line 39.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at Makefile.PL line 39.
There was a problem creating Makefile - exiting!

and now, I have no clue what I can do next....

Any help is appreciated.

German greenhorns usually don't need more assistance than other greenhorns
;-).

No good. This is still running perl 5.6, but slimserver runs best with 5.8.

You could try my perl 5.8 package from my site:
http://www.herger.net/slim/ - it was compiled for another redhat 7.3 based
system (SME aka. e-smith) for exactly this reason. It should contain all
the modules that are needed to run slimserver.

Good luck!

Hi Michael,
thank you very much for your assistance, I really do appreciate it.
Your step bey step instructions were very useful.
Now, I'm able to start the SlimServer using the command:

cd /usr/local/slimserver
/usr/local/bin/perl5.8.6 slimserver.pl

I applied the modifications you have told to do on "slimserver.pl" (manually and with the update58.sh script):

<snip>
#!/usr/local/bin/perl5.8.6 -w

but the big moment "service slimserver start" doesn't do it for me right now... I can't start the service. I'm still investigateing what's going on...

Thanks,
Carsten

Hi,
this is the output generated when starting the service:

Mmmmh, I got my panties in a wad....

Thanks, this helps a little more. I guess slimserver does work if you run
it as root, but not if you want to start the service?

I think this is a permission issue. Please verify /etc/slimserver.conf: if
it contains parameters pointing to /root, rename the file and try again.
And remove the .slimserversql.db (/root or /usr/local/slimserver or
subfolder thereof)

and what about "/usr/local/slimserver/slimserver.pl" (without the perl)?

Hi Michael,
the file /etc/slimserver.conf hasn't had any references pointing to /root but the .slimserversql.db file was owned by /root.
I removed this file which was located in /usr/local/slimserver/Cache and now the service starts flawlessly with the approbiate user.

Thanks again for your immediate responses, they were a great help to get my old system running again using the new server software.
