View Full Version : Multiple artist tags in flac files?

I was just reading that the recommended means of tagging flac files with multiple artists is to use multiple "artist=..." vorbis comments. So an album such as "Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers with Thelonius Monk" might have several artist tags:

artist=Art Blakey
artist=Thelonius Monk
artist=Johnny Griffin

If I go to the trouble of tagging my flac files in this manner, will SlimServer pick up all of the artists and catalog the tracks appropriately?

This shows the target version for this enhancement as v6.1. Is it currently implemented in the nigthlies of that trunk?

If I began tagging files today in the prescribed manner, what is the current behavior of SlimServer 6.0.x - will it pick up the value of only first named tag it finds, the last one, neither, or ??

The target only means that the goal is to have that implemented in time
for the 6.1 release. When it is fixed and part of the builds, then it
will be marked as fixed. I consider it a great step forward that
someone is actually working on it. Hopefully that patch wont take too
long

the behaviour for multiple artists has changed too many times for me to
recall just which way it works now :)

No.

It will pick up the last tag.

IMHO the current tagging system is flawed anyway - not that it's
slimserver's fault. Clearly what's needed are seperate tags for
information that should be displayed and information that's just in
there because it's interesting and / or useful for cross indexing.

Ideally the tag structure would allow hierarchical structures of
arbitrary like ALBUM.TITLE, ALBUM.LABEL, TRACK.NUMBER, TRACK.TITLE,
TRACK.TITLE.SUBTITLE ... and any software handling these tags would
use custom format strings that specify what to use when, thus allowing
you to customize tags without having to worry about software support.
Classical could have another tagging system altogether.
