I am new to this and am wondering the best way to tag the music I rip to my drive.

I was thinking:

Artist/Disc/Track No./Track Name/Genre

Does anyone have any better ideas?

It is really up to you.
I do it 100% reversed from you.
genre/artist/album/
with each track separate in the directory with names like
08 - Chestnut Mare

Just a note, the tagging, which are fields like artist, song title,
label, genre, etc. are completely separate from the physical
layout of the wav/flac/mp3 files on your disks.
There is no requirement that the physical disk layout
have anything to do with the metadata tags

You might want to subscribe to the ripping list/forum
ripping mailing list
ripping (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com
http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping

as one of the ideas was to split the discussions
by topic (ripping, audiophiles, unix, ...)
