There's information on setting up SlimServer under MySQL at:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?MySQL

Does anyone have an opinion as to whether this setup would yield better performance or other actual benefits over the default, supported configuration?

I don't have actual experience with Slimserver and MySql, but
I have lots with Mysql. I expect that once 6.* settles down
I'll move to the six series and use MySql

I can't imagine any significant performance difference.
Unless you already have MySql running on the server
and don't want yet another database package.

MySql has good performance, but a SlimServer
is not what I'd call a serious database load.
I only start to think about it when there are
tens of users doing seven way joins.

Then, I only have a little over 10K songs on 700+ albums
