View Full Version : The Art of Skinning

One other forum I'd like to see eventually created is one in which skinning could be discussed.

I did some searches and found surprisingly little discussion regarding skinning on either the discuss list or the developers list. This doesn't strike me as a developer topic, as the developers seem to have bigger fish to fry, so no surprises there. But I would have expected more semi-skilled users like myself to have an interest in developing more ergonomic interfaces. Perhaps the user community just isn't large enough yet. Or perhaps the facilites for creating more interesting skins aren't yet a part of the server.

I'll be playing around some with creating something I'd like to use - using more JavaScript if possible for dynamic display of information. Things like clicking on an icon next to an album and seeing all of the available tracks within the window (rather than going back to the server and having it shoot down a new page), then having icons within the window to play or queue the track. Or the ability within the now-playing and playlist to view detailed track information.

At the risk of rekindling the flame war over forum vs. list, I think the forums should go a long way toward fostering discussion among end users and enthusiasts rather than primarily being a Slim Devices support medium. Given the great product and the great development team I'm pretty excited about the possibilities.

There've been a number of interesting alphas produced... if they make it
to the usable state and the author is okay with it, they go into the server.

Go for it! Check out ExBrowse2, it does a lot of nice stuff in DHTML.
People have also written Flash-based skins and a XUL-based skin.

just stop talking right there and you'll avoid rekindling anything.
