View Full Version : Announce: New Forums - and email list gateway - Please Read!

It's been obvious for some time that a better forums / email interface has
been needed. We've been working hard the past few days to bring up a solution
that works for everyone.

Here's the breakdown:

New Web Forums are up at http://forums.slimdevices.com/ - using vBulletin.

The discuss list is now split up into the following forums, and their
corresponding mail lists:

==========

* General Discussion - discuss (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com

Mail list subscription: http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

* Linux / Unix Issues - unix (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com

Mail list subscription: http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/unix

* 3rd Party Plugins (AlienBBC, etc) - plugins (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com

Mail list subscription: http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/plugins

* Developers - developers (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com

Mail list subscription: http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/developers

* Audiophiles - audiophiles (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com

Mail list subscription: http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

* Ripping / Encoding / Transcoding / Tagging - ripping (AT) lists (DOT) slimdevices.com

Mail list subscription: http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/ripping

==========

The gateway between the mail lists and the web forums runs every 5 minutes -
so if you see a delay, that's where it's coming from.

Mail sent from the mail lists will appear on the forums as "Your Name" with
"Guest" underneath. If you sign up for a forums account, and your email is
the same as on the mail lists, that "Guest" tag will go away.

Mail sent from the forums will appear on the mail lists as "Your Name"
<bogus-email (AT) no-mx (DOT) forums.slimdevices.com> - with a Reply-To: set to the mail list.

==========

We'll be tweaking the forums as needed. Please let us know if you have any questions.

Thanks

- The Slim Devices Team

Looks like there is a bug in the vBulletin setup. Registration images
are not being generated, but are required, effectively blocking
registration.

I guess it's too late to suggest splitting off Windows and Mac-specific
lists as well?

I can't subscribe as your registration image generator is broken:

Removed for now. It was working last night. I guess the gremlins got to it.

That was brought up in our discussion, and may happen in the future.

We didn't want to fragment the lists too much from the start.

That would possibly be nice - I have no interest in Mac-specific content.

However, how does a user know if something is Mac-specific? Is there enough Mac traffic to require its own list (forum)?

I'd hate it if people posted things to a Mac-specific list if they weren't actually Mac specific problems. For that reason, I'm not sure it's all that wise to have a specific unix list. Perhaps it would be better to have a specific windows list, as that would be the biggest group of users.

Dan, would it make sense to set up a "Test" forum?

Might be nice to have a place to test out the gateway/username
integration without spilling noise into the general forums.

Thanks,

Yes - we can do that. There's been a test email list since at least two years ago. :)

Thanks!
I know there were lots of dissenting opinions for the email/vs web..

It was very hard (in my opinion of course) to be a casual participant in the old list-only forums.

Just maybe I'll be more active now.

Thanks bunches

Cool, thanks.

Oh, one more question:
Will the gmane NNTP integration continue?

What happened to the other forum site that was being developed? At least that had some resemblence of a threaded approach.

It looks like some attempt has been made to split old mailing list messages into message topics in the forum. I can see lots of root messages that have the same title, but aren't grouped. And messages that are in the same grouping aren't displayed threaded.

Will this improve as new messages are posted - ie. is just an artifact of the transit period? I'd hate it if email messages aren't threaded properly because people post new messages in the forum, rather than replies to specific posts.

All in all, most people should be satisfied though.

Gee, what a day. First I hear that EZTree was closed, then Slim Devices had moved to forums, then find that EZTree has appeared to re-open as DIME. My day seems to be recovering ;)

Yes - the developers & discuss lists are still being sent to gmane.

Someone will need to set up the other lists - not sure if we did that
initially, or someone from gmane did.

I find myself sticking to the discuss list to find out about if there
are cool new features available for my Squeezebox (i.e., Rss Plugin,
AlienBBC, etc), while I'm really not interested in the majority of posts
(with the audiophile back and forth being my least favorite -- any email
containing the string 'jitter' is drawn and quartered, flogged, then
automatically shot back at the sender in a burst of flesh-colored confetti).

I'm probably missing this somewhere, but is there a moderated /
low-traffic (pick one or both ;) list that will announce new and updated
plugins, new slimserver releases, press releases (ie new product), and
the like? I do see the 3rd Party Plugins list/forum, however, I am
fairly sure that will mainly consist of support queries, and would not
contain any info on new slimserver or product releases, etc.

Could this perhaps be integrated into the Slimserver product -- "Update
plugin -> Check for new plugins, Slimserver updates, etc."?

Best regards,
Nick

The Gossamer Forum software was not as flexible as we would have liked it to
be without a decent amount of coding going into it.

You can change your display mode to Threaded or Hybrid views in the user preferences.

Yes - I made an attempt at moving some of the messages into their appropriate
new lists/forums. It is an artifact of the transit period.

The mail gateway attempts to find a References: header first, and then goes
by Subject: for the threading integration.

Not moved - just added. :)

There isn't currently - but that's a very good idea. I'll toss it around the office.

>Could this perhaps be integrated into the Slimserver product -- "Update

Right now the plugins are scattered about various home pages of the people
developing them. At some point in the future (near?), we'd like to have a
centralized database, along the lines of Winamp Plugins.

Once that happens - the feature you suggest will be more feasible.

I tend to agree. Also, The Unix/Linux list should possibly include
Mac. There are differences, of course, but most Mac problems have
been Unixy in nature.

Do we have to sign up separately to the email lists if we want them?

Though, at the moment, I think that, while I was happy with one big
email ist, if I have to subscribe to many, I may as well change to
the forums.

not replaced. in addition to. those who prefer to have it the way it is,
nothing changes except for some noise disappearing in favour of a more

again, they are one and the same. I'll probably use both from time to time, but
right now, this is email. i've never had anything against either, aside from
the practical limits of use from certain locations. at home, I'm free to use
either. I'm pleased that a solution has finally come along that shows the

Thank goodness for that ;)

Are the RSS feeds still going to be maintained too?

One other request - I will predominantly use email still, but one thing that I like from other mailing lists/forums integration (eg. Yahoo), is the ability to register more than one email address that messages can be sent from. I am registered on the lists with slim (AT) hergest (DOT) demon.co.uk, and emails flood in and are filtered into sub-folders. However, by default my mail client posts messages with a from address of phil (AT) hergest (DOT) demon.co.uk, and I have to change this to slim@ for messages to the list. Occasionally, I look at my POP3 mail from work; so it would be nice to allow me to post using my work email address, without having to register that as another account as well.

Yes - via Mailman, and vBulletin has it's own RSS system:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/external.php?type=rss&forumids=2

Use type=rss2 for RSS 2.0

You can subscribe to the mail lists with different addresses, and then set
those addresses to not receive any email using the Mailman interface.

Ah. That will do the trick. Thanks. However, I can't find the mailing list subscription web page now - the "Mailing List & Forums" link takes me directly into the forum, and automatically logs me in - I can't find a way to log off.

The sticky thread at the top of each forum has the URL for the mail list info page.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to keep a link to the mailing list signup on the resources page though?

Hi,

I read from news.gmane.org - will I still be able to do this for the new
groups?

Thanks.

Yes - they'll take a few days to get setup however.

Do we need to set them up with gmane - or have gmane started the signup
process.

Cheers

I've let gmane know about the new lists. Not sure when they'll get around to it though..

There seems to be an oddity with the default skin for the web
interface, running Slimserver 6.0.0 under Mac OS 10.3.8.

When I open the web interface, under the player side,
Save/Download/Clear appears briefly, but this soon changes to
download/clear, with Save no longer appearing.

This is completely consistent, Save sometimes doesn't appear at all,
but never appears for more than a few seconds.

This issue occurs with both Safari and Internet Explorer. I've tried
several other Web interfaces (Defualt 2, fishbone, Moser,
Ruttenberg), and they are all fine, Save is shown as remains present
and usable.

You probably want to post this as a new forum topic or new email thread.
