I've always used the file naming convention of _[album].jpg for album
covers (and _[album].m3u for playlits). In Windows Explorer this places
these files at the top of the folder listing.

So in the Server Settings / Interface I have %_ALBUM specified as the
alternate artwork file naming convention. Is this not correct or is there
some reason it won't work? The only covers that Slim Server is picking up
are those named cover.jpg.

This is a known issue, brought about by the use of the db backend. Due to the timing of artwork handling, the infoformat variables needed aren't available at the time. It is filed here:

Comment added. The problem appears to only be at the Home / Browse
Artwork page level - the page that displays thumbnail sized images. At
the next level the full-sized artwork appears correctly.
