View Full Version : Browse Artwork - doesn't show any album details

Apologies if this has been mentioned before - am new here; have had a quick look, but have not seen it mentioned. Maybe I've just missed it.

When "Browse Artwork" is selected, it does not show any album details under each thumbnail, just "Play" and "Add to playlist".

Using SlimServer 6.0.1, on Windows XP WS, as of last night.

I may be mistaken, but I'm sure the previous version on the trial box here - 6.0b1 - showed more detail under each thumbnail.

Am I dreaming?

Regards

Frank

I've just begun playing with artwork and browsing by artwork so I have no
recollection of whether that's how it used to work. But I do know that it
_should_ work like this. The album name and date appear where there's no
thumbnail shown, but when there _is_ a thumbnail they're not being
displayed. There's no way to recognize many albums only by their
thumbnailed image.

I'd also like to see the sort order as artist/album, or maybe
artist/year/album rather than just by album name. Ideally there'd be some
ability to change the sort order from within the interface.

sorting options for browse artwork is filed under bug 305, if I recall
correctly.

the information currently appears in the tooltips when you move the mouse over
the thumbnail. Utilmately, it would be nice to be able to put up artwork
alongside the other listings as a thumnail on the left side instead of having
its own mode.

Exactly. I just left a comment under bug (enhancement request) 948. A
similar approach to the interface would be to have a checkbox on the home
page that the user can tick to "Browse with Artwork". Then any of the
standard browses would display the thumbnailed page view now used for
Browse by Artwork (which could be eliminated), otherwise show the table
view. If possible the setting should be remembered between visits to the
server so that it doesn't need to be checked each time.

Glad it's not just me <g>.

As another note says, some details appear in a tooltip bubble - but only the album title; artist too would be useful. More useful would be to have full details appear in text beneath the thumbnail.

And agree completely that it would be great if the sort order were adjustable. My own personal preference is to sort whole list by artists, grouped by album. Also another note suggests having thumbnails available everywhere, whatever the browse method. I'd agree with this too.

While we're on the subject of artwork, it would be nice to see the currently playing thumbnail at the top of the player window on the RHS of the web interface too, so regardless of where you've browsed to subsequently in the LHS browse window, you still see the a/w for currently playing track.

My own use of this is to use the web interface ONLY for controlling this thing, hence the importance of getting the web interface right. No need to use the Squeezebox's screen or remote at all. Here's why:-

1. We have a client for whom we're currently trying to spec an office-wide jukebox system, where a central player is connected to speakers around the office, and all users are able to see from their own PCs what's queued on the jukebox, and add their own selections to it. For this, the web interface to the SlimServer box is PERFECT, and will be the only interface users use. Am trialling it here in our own offices, and it looks to be just the job, apart from these web interface issues described.

It's surprising that more of these MP3-streaming devices do not have this kind of web interface for central control of a single device. You'd think the applications for it would be very wide indeed, just like the one we have. No need for streaming different things to multiple devices - just want control from multiple points of one central player. SlimServer does it. As far as I've been able to find so far, it's almost on its own in this (though please feel free to put me right). Think we've found the solution we need.

2. Personal use here: I've tried several of these music streaming boxes - NetGear MP101, Hauppauge MVP etc (though not an SB2 yet) - and the one limitation they all have (though maybe not the SB?) is the small size of the screen on which you browse and select your music. Trying them has made me realise with some surprise how UN-familiar I am with the album titles of things I've been playing for years. I'm an old fart, and have been used to digging in the cabinet for the album or CD I'm after, or often just browsing through, recognising a cover, and deciding to play that one. But whatever governs the choice, it's what it LOOKS like rather than what it's called that produces the recognition. With only text to play with for recognition, this process is very different. My feeling is that devices with bigger screens, with bigger ranges of images to browse through in order to select, will be the ones that win in the end. A few lines of text do not work the same way, IMO.

I'm probably wrong!

If you use the fishbone skin - it does.

Conversly, I find it's quite nice when playing tracks on the SB to see the
name of the song and tie it into the music: I rarely bother looking at CD
cover notes, and (mostly) never know the titles of the tracks (numbers
maybe...). But with LPs it's an eniterly different matter of course!

So it _does_. I hadn't spotted that. So do a couple of others.... Thank you.

I'd been unfair to (and dumb with) the other skins. Had selected a few, didn't like the way they looked in the "Behaviour" menu, and hadn't bothered taking any of them any further. If I'd pushed the refresh button above (rather than the one next to the selector drop-down, which is what I'd used) and looked around, I'd have been a great deal more impressed with the hard work that's gone into them. Fishbone looks really good..... Thanks for the prod to look further.

Clearly our ages are showing <g>. But you have a good point - hadn't thought of that, but you're right.

When "Browse Artwork" is selected, it does not show any album details under each thumbnail, just "Play" and "Add to playlist".

I was wondering: Can this be accomplished within a skin or does it have to be hard coded within the page generation source code?

skins can do it. The Fishbone skin, for example, has play, queue, add, remove
under each artwork. The album name appear in the tooltips, so you could use
the same variable to display text. Just take note that doing so will have odd
results for the layout. They come out rather scattered insted of on a grid.

I've been working on a patch to add artwork to the left side of the browse
albums, possibly to replace the browse artwork page. see bug 882 for the
current version of the patch. In theory, this could also be done for the
artists, but it is a bit more complex to pick one from several albums than just
one :)

with the patch, new music will also show cover art.

Cool. Can the grid itself be pinned down (td widths, for instance) within the skin?

How about thumbnails to the left of albums in the Brows Artist list as well, instead of just the album name? This would be at the Home/Browse Artists/[ArtistName] level. May as well add year while you're at it. :)

My problem with Browse Albums is that since the sort order is by album name, for practical purposes it presents a nearly random ordering of music. Like most people, I normally store CDs grouped by artist. I can definitely see a use for finding things like soundtracks and other various artist collections by album name, but for _browsing_ grouping by artist seems a lot more functional.

not that I've found so far. Even getting the artwork in a grid is more luck
that anything else. set server to show placeholders and it sitll falls apart.

oddly, that does exist using the showartist and showyear prefs.

The artwork patch that I've mentioned, however, will always show an artwork when
an album is being listed. only showArtist is restricted to top level only
since lower levels, the artist is already picked. I think you need 6.1
nightlies to get the full effect. When cover art isn't found, I've used a
default image found on the server (for layout purposes). Fishbone skin only at
this point.
