View Full Version : New SB2 owner is getting a bit worried

I've not seen SB2 in the UK yet, although in fairness I've not looked
too hard as I'm happy enough with SB1 for the moment.

I've seen discussion of various issue/problems with the slimserver v6
release, but don't be overly concerned. From my own experience, I've
had it running solidly for most of the weekend after a very recent
upgrade (mainly streaming radio, but also a good few hours of MP3
playback) and it seems fine. I had a minor issue with DB corruption
which was very easily fixed by upgrading to a new "nightly" build. I
know that a lot of people here would consider nightly builds to be beta
- perhaps that is the case, although I see it as kind of an intermediate
service pack (or a cumulative patch or something). It's listed on the
site as a maintenance release, so it doesn't worry me that much.

I can't speak about the SB2 hardware, as I've not seen/used one. But
I've not seen much on these lists regards hardware probs... I would
imagine that the most serious problem would be intermittent restart of
the SB2 hardware. Again, based on my own experience with SB1, I would
say that the majority of reboots are caused by wi-fi interference, and
therefore something that Slim Devices can't control. If you experience
anything like this, sort out interference first (e.g. reposition the
device, or change channels, or get a directional antenna etc). Can't
comment on any of the other issues you refer to, though.

But bear in mind that Slim Devices seem to be a cool company :) My
perception is that they are "safe" - if you experience any problem, and
find that you can't fix it then return the device for a refund. If it
were me, I wouldn't hold off getting an SB2 just because there may be
some issues - but these are issues you may never encounter, so don't
worry about it unless it happens.

The support here is pretty cool, so if you encounter a problem there's a
good chance that it can be resolved through use of these lists.

Subject: [slim] New SB2 owner is getting a bit worried

I'm completely new to the whole Squeezebox arena. I learnt about SB a
few weeks ago and now have a SB2 on order in the UK from
multitaskcomputing.co.uk. In the meantime, I've put together a
Debian/testing box with a large hard disk and have started ripping my
entire cd collection to FLAC using EAC. I'm running SlimServer 6.01 on
the server and am using SoftSqueeze on my pc. I've no idea when my SB2
will arrive so, to steady my impatience, have started reading this
forum. I've therefore started reading all sorts of comments saying bad
things about SlimServer 6.0, and have also found comments saying that
SB2 will likely have hardware issues that will be resolved (in the
hardware, not the firmware) in future versions. It seems that I've
basically bought a beta-release hardware product which I'll be running
with a beta-release server. Obviously, this worries me quite a lot! Are
these things really true? Should I cancel my SB2 order immediately and
wait 6 months (or buy something else)? I'm obviously hoping that this
isn't the case. Please reassure a new member of the flock!

As an aside, does anyone know what the situation with buying an SB2 in
the UK is? They seem to be in rather short supply!

Thanks,

Max Spicer

I ordered mine on the 30th March and spoke to someone at MultiTask
immediately beforehand. They said that they were getting 50 wireless
SB2's and had sold 90. :-( When I asked how long it would be before I
got mine, they said that they honestly couldn't tell me, and that
everyone else in the UK was in the same position.

many comments in this forum have degraded into speculation and rampant negative
ranting. truth must be picked carefully from the chaff of those wishing to
garner attention.

again, speculation. as you are well-aware, the number of people who actualy
HAVE hardware is few but growing. suggesting a 'likeliness' of hardware issues
is complete speculation. I actually HAVE a beta unit and it has been working
very well, with an occasional issue that can be fixed with firmware. there was
one issue with audio that has been resolved by the complete rework of the
analogue audio stage, including a very nice Burr-Brown DAC.

It is not beta harware. That's what I have, and not what you will be getting.
Server software is release software. It has bugs that have been found since
release, and those are either fixed or targetted to be fixed
(http://bugs.slimdevices.com) at the 6.0.1 or 6.1 level.

I can reassure you, its a damn fine piece of kit. The server does need a bit of
progress, but that comes daily. Slim Devices offers a 30-day no-questions
return policy for direct orders, which their vendors may also replicate. You
can decide for yourself.

The supply is coming. Its only about 10 days since first shipment, and there is
a fair backlog as Sean has pointed out.
