I'm running xmms on the same machine that's running slimserver. xmms
will play PCM and flac in addition to mp3.

Is it possible to stream PCM (or even flac) directly to xmms via
slimserver and avoid the lame encoding?

And if it is possible, how to I specify in convert.conf xmms on a
given machine? (I'd only want to do PCM for some machines, not on my
wireless laptop, for example).

Thanks,

players like xmms are currently identified as the http player type. The formats
currently supported in the server for http is mp3. There is a request based on
url streaming which includes defining other file types in the url as part of
its scope:
http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=131

were this to happen, you would only need to chnage the url you use.
convert.conf would work as is.

Ok. I was thinking of matching the User-Agent string to set what is
allowed. I guess what I don't know is if xmms could be streamed both
mp3 and PCM (say if both .mp3 and .flac are in the play list at the
same time). Can it switch mid-stream between pcm and mp3?

Seems reasonable.
