Not trying to start a war here, as I love my slimp3, But......

does anyone else feel Slimdevices are starting to slip behind in this area, the
number of devices that can connect to slimserver is small and the ability to
connect a slim device to other server is not there either.

the Roku thing can connect to the Microsoft streaming service or itunes etc, and
there are now a growing number of server apps that allow multiple different
devices to connect i.e. twonky...

I am not disputing that slim is or is not the best, but am suggesting that this
may be irrelevant for the long term success if it restricted in it's use.

I would like one server being accessed my multiple different devices,

Just a thought !!

To me the fact that Rhapsody support has been broken by the V6 software
and doesn't look like it's going to get fixed is a real worry. I use it
extensively and to have to lose it may make me look elsewhere.

TelCanto Server will work in conjunction with a Slim Player of course -
true it needs the SlimServer running somehwere but it drives the server
via the CLI.. There are some tweaks still needed for this in V6 but in
V5 I used this setup as it worked for me with large libraries (I could
run SlimServer with no library and hence it ran fast). (Single player
only though ,or multiple TelCanto launches).

Aside from that the V6 software is way way better for me performance
wise and has been a major (and long needed) architecture shift for Slim.
My experience of the later V5 builds was depressing in my setup . Once
V6 is bedded in I'm hoping there's more time for other niceties. V6 has
restored consistent playback for me which was a major frustration and
'deal breaker' for me before.

UPnP is certainly the route towards that - I haven't seen much mention
on Slim lists about UPnP - are there any thoughts in this direction,
being able to stream from a UPnP media server with more recents SB's
? BTW The latest beta version of TelCanto adds support as both a
UPnP Media Server and Media Renderer , haven't tried it but this just
might allow a convoluted route to playing music from a UPnP Server to a
Slim player (via SlimServer).

Graham,
I don't agree with your premise here. Why on earth would Slim Devices want
to facilitate multiple brands of devices connecting to their free, open
source server? Exactly how is that a profitable model for a company that
sells hardware? As for the connections to other players, streaming svc's
etc, the mroe the better. This is probably the more critical element to the
continued success of the product, particularly i-tunes and rhapsody. But
judging from the new Squeezenetwork, I think they realize this.

Mike
