View Full Version : Squeezeboxes randomly rebooting

Howdy --

I've seen a few people mention that their Squeezeboxes were randomly
rebooting. I have two Squeezeboxes that I bought a couple of years
ago that both started behaving the same way a few months ago:
everything seems to work fine for a while, but then the Squeezebox
suddenly cuts out as if it's lost power for a second, then goes
through the usual restart sequence and restarts the last song it was
playing before it died, over from the beginning.

I was very happy with these Squeezeboxes for quite a while after
getting them, but now they're both driving me nuts. No idea what
might be causing the problem, but I had both (a) moved to another
house and (b) upgraded the firmware shortly before the problems
started occuring. Further firmware updates don't seem to be helping.
No other devices on the same power circuit have "power spontaneously
cuts out" problems. I've been using the same wireless router since I
first got the Squeezeboxes and haven't mucked with the config, so I
doubt the router has anything to do with the problem.

Any ideas? Has anyone had any similar experiences with the new
Squeezebox 2s? I'd think about ust going ahead and upgrading, but I'm
going to pretty darn unhappy if the same thing starts happening again,
and I haven't yet found any indication that anyone's figured out the root of
this problem.

Scott - what OS is SlimServer running on?

Thanks.

Windows XP. I'm pretty sure I've had the problem occur while the
SlimServer was running on either my laptop (XP Pro SP2) or my desktop
(XP Home, no SP).

Are there any known ways that a SlimServer failure and/or network
failure could cause the Squeezebox to reboot like this, or is it most
likely to be a hardware glitch?

Thanks,

I'm not sure at this point - but I believe I've at least narrowed it down to
the server being on Windows.

I have one tcpdump of what happens right before the client reboots.

If you don't mind - could you install Ethereal, and capture all the traffic
between your machine and a Squeezebox? Trying to get right up to where it reboots.

Thanks.

I've also experienced the reboot problem with exactly the same symptoms as those described in this thread. In general, the music suddenly stops, the squeezebox reboots and then the song starts from the beginning again. It's not always random as occasionally, the squeezebox reboots at exactly the same spot in the song. On these occasions, I suspect an encoding or decoding glitch is responsible, but although the same song will go down at the same time on two or more consecutive occasions, the same tracks will play just fine on many other occasions. That coupled with the usually random nature of the reboots suggests a server-side or data transmission error. The tracks that occasionally cause these reboots are all VBR encoded (alt-preset normal LAME).

On the server side (5.4.1 running on Mac OS 10.2.8), I frequently get crashes, particularly when browsing long lists of albums/songs while the squeezebox is receiving a stream. Much less frequently when the box is idle. But all in all, the software is normally quite stable and I can listen for hours before encountering a reboot or server crash. I did try the 6.0beta a few weeks ago, but the server crashed immediately on streaming every time, so I went back to 5.4.1. The server (iMac 400MHz G3) is wirelessly bridged to my D-Link 713P router via ethernet.

All seems to have gone quiet on this issue... Is it still a live problem?

I'm seeing the same problems occasionally (SB1 firmware v40, SlimServer 6.1.1 running on XP Pro SP2) and was wondering whether any fix (or even a cause!) had been identified.

Thanks,
Nick.
