I'd go with a Pocket PC PDA. Then you could use the following app:

http://www.griffintechnology.com/griffinmobile/totalremote/

And make the PDA a universal remote for everything!
If you get a PDA that has the cellphone tech so you can get online
anywhere, you can browse your slimserver while at the record store to
make sure you don't already have that album....

Also see this forum for more discussion on using PDA's as remotes:

http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-pda/list.cgi

But as long as you have WiFI on your pda you can hook into your wireless
network and control slimserver through the pda's browser.

Can anyone recommend a PDA for use as a remote with Slimserver. I would
like
to view Album covers in colour on the unit. Do I require anything else
with
the PDA aside from software (Sailing?)
