I have it set at about 12:00, i.e. straight up. I must say that the
Squeezebox output seems to be a fair bit quieter than my CD player. For
example, with the squeezebox full on I have to have the amplifier at 12:00
to get the volume to the same level as my CD player when the amp is only at
09:00, if that makes sense.

Hi Robin,

Did you change the player setting to use a fixed digital output? That
has the side effect of reducing the analog output level.

I finally got around to trying this and it's definitely broken.

I've got a patch almost ready to commit with a fix. Stay tuned.
