Don't think w2003 server has built in firewall (think Microsoft just put
that onto XP SP2) so you should not need to do this unless you are running a
personal firewall on the machine. If you are running W2003 server behind a
firewall and only need access on your internal network it should work fine.

I am afraid I cannot comment on performance as my server is quite highly
spec'ed and running as an MP3 box for about 40000 tracks.

It does run as a service.

Only if you're using 3rd party plugins which use additional modules.

Be sure to open your machine's firewall on the required ports!
