Am I correct in thinking that to get Slimserver to use
Musicmagic, Musicmagic needs to be running with the
API enabled when Slimserver starts?
If (under Windows XP) Slimserver is set to run as a
system service how can Musicmagic be running? Even if
it is in the Startup menu it will not run until all
the services have been started?

This is correct.

It can't. This is a drawback of the integration. You'll have to run the
slimserver manually or as a startup item where you can ensure musicmagic is
running.

In the meantime, I'll see if I can find a way to enable the connection after
startup, in such a way that wont totally anger anyone who has no intention of
using musicmagic. Curently, the plugin will show as disabled in the server
settings->plugins if it could not init on startup. Maybe enabling it can be a
trigger to recheck.
