What about using kdf's 'Execute' plugin to run a program on the server on
powerup, that triggers a remote relay via RS232? Would something like that
work?

Subject: [slim] executing binaries on a squeezebox

Rats...any ideas on how to remotely trigger a server with a bunch of
disks to spin up only when needed? I've got quite a bit of disk space
that I don't necessarily want to spin 24x7, yet I definitely want
available...

The idea is simple, power on the SB and the server starts up a minute
later, then some sort of polling script on the server to determine if
any clients are currently connected/playing and if not, shutdown and
wait until the next wake statement.

any ideas??

Not for this application. If the server is in standby, then the squeezebox is
not functioning and unable to trigger the plugin. The squeezebox depends on the
server for everything including display and button response. There are only 2
functions hardcoded into firmware: press-and-hold power for reset and
press-and-hold brightness for a firmware update.
