"It seems like there may be more than one way to get to a working AlienBBC
plugin. You seemed to get there quickly, without all the drama and gnashing
of teeth that I had."

No, I just struggled on my own - before I found this list! Actually Jules
helped me a bit via email. I found that developers (in general) assume a
level of expertise that newbies (like me) just don't have: like what the
nightlys are, and how you get them on a windows machine :(

"But I got there eventually with a lot of help. And
your success certainly helped keep my spirits from flagging.

It looks like from your writeup, that you ended up with your mplayer codecs
not directly in the multi-thread directory. Is that right? It certainly
didn't work for me that way."

I have an "mplayer", "codecs" and "drivers" directories under the
multi-thread directory, but there are quite a few files (including
mplayer.exe) directly in the multi-thread directory anyway, so maybe that's
all it's using?

"So, all I can say to those about to try AlienBBC under windows is... Don't
give up! It can be done.
Bruce"

Agreed! It's a very good application, and it would be a shame if people gave
up before getting it to work.

Well, I think I spoke too soon.

Last night I sat down to enjoy some BBC streams with my newly working
AlienBBC, picked up the remote to my SliMP3, burrowed down through the
menus, pressed play at a likely stream, and watched as the same "RTSP
Convert
Error -check file type" appeared on the display. That's the same error
message I had been getting before when it wasn't finding the codecs. I had
done all my testing with Softsqueeze and had assumed that if it worked for
Softsqueeze it would work on my SlimP3 (it always has).

I checked again, Softsqueeze plays real media just fine.. unless it is
synchronized with the SliMP3, in which case it gives the RTSP error.

Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Bruce

Triode helped me figure out that I neglected to reinstall Lame after I did
the Slimserver rebuild from scratch. I should probably have some kind of
checklist of everything added along the way, so that when I have to do this
again I don't miss anything.

Interesting that Softsqueeze didn't seem to need the lame, but the SliMP3
did.

This would be the case as the slimp3 can only decode mp3 (so everything must
be transcoded to mp3 via lame) while softsqueeze and the squeezebox can
accept either mp3 or raw (wav) formats.
