Bruce,

You are in just the position I was 4 days ago. I'm using the 5.4.1 nighly
and found the codecs directory should hang off the
bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread directory.

Currently there are a few issues with the live streams ,but test your setup
(other streams, Radio Scotland for instance) until Jules has fixed the
parsing of the BBC web site

The other problem I had was not remembering to copy over the
socketwrapper.exe when I upgraded the nightly builds from the AlienBBC zip
file (I found the culprit #PIPE# file had swallowed up all available disk
space and the machine hung)

HTH

Regards

Simon

Subject: [slim] AlienBBC - Trying a WinXP install

I'm having trouble getting AlienBBC working on my WinXP PC . I've tried to
follow the instructions on www.mrtickle.org/alienbbc_beta.html

Here's what I've got so far:
- I'm running the Slimserver nightly install from a day ago.
- I've installed the AlienBBC windows archive into the c:\program
files\slimserver\server directory
- I Installed mplayer to dir: c:\program
files\slimserver\server\bin\MSWin32-x86\mplayer
- I Installed 'Windows essential codecs' to dir: c:\program
files\slimserver\server\bin\MSWin32-x86\mplayer\codecs (they ended up in
codecs\windows essentials but I dragged them back to \codecs)

-Running slimserver.exe --d_plugins from a command prompt yields the
following message when AlienBBC loads: "Alien BBC reports Version 6 Server
says: 0"

-I see the AlienBBC plugin, and can navigate down to playable entries, but
when I try to play them I get the following error message on the display:
"RTSP Convert Error - check file type"

-Also, selecting BBC Live yields "No items"

Any idea where I should go from here?

Bruce

Could you describe your directory setup in just a little more detail. I've
tried arranging things in a couple different ways, and haven't hit upon the
right way yet.

The first thing I tried had a mplayer directory with three subdirectories

Program Files\Slimserver\server\Bin\MSWIN320-x86-multithread\mplayer
-codecs (holding mplayers original ammended with the Windows essentials)
-drivers
-mplayer

I've also tried moving these three subdirectories out from under an mplayer
directory
Program Files\Slimserver\server\Bin\MSWIN320-x86-multithread
codecs
drivers
mplayer

This didn't work either.

Bruce

mplayer.exe should be in the Bin\MSWin32-x86-multi-thread directory (same directory as socketwrapper.exe)

I don't seem to have socketwrapper.exe in my installation. Where does it
come from? Where does it go?

An install of Slimserver from the zip file should include socketwrapper.exe in the C:\Program Files\SlimServer\server\Bin\MSWin32...
directory (alongside oggdec.exe , flac.exe etc)

However alienbbc needs an updated one, so when you unzip the windows version it should overwrite the original one.

That should be install from the windows .exe file [to get the original slimserver socketwrapper.exe]

I'm getting closer. I checked the zip file for socketwrapper and it was
there. Somehow it didn't get to the right place when I unzipped the file.
I copied it over and it looks like I'm getting closer. The streams 'play'
without sound for a few seconds then restart 0:00.

In addition to adding the socketwrapper.exe directly into the
Bin\MSWIN320-x86-multithread directory, I just dragged the mplayer.exe file
there too from the Bin\MSWIN320-x86-multithread\mplayer. Should I start
dragging other things there too, like the codecs? They currently are
sitting in the Bin\MSWIN320-x86-multithread\codec directory. And all the
other mplayer files are in the Bin\MSWIN320-x86-multithread\mplayer
directory.

Does this make sense? I guess what I am asking is how much of the mplayer
installation needs to be directly in Bin\MSWIN320-x86-multithread

Here's a copy of the debug output in my current configuration.
I launched slim using the debug options as before, then pressed play on a
BBC stream I used before. Once it cycled through a time or two, I stopped
it and checked the log. What is "would have blocked" all about?
