Definitely sounds like you are having load issues on the server machine.
Can you run the system monitor and see if your dropouts are accompanied by
heavy cpu load or heavy cpu swapping on the server?

One other thing to try - I had a similar problem when using 128 Mb WEP
encryption - going to 64Mb seemed to fix it
