Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, it didn't work -- here's how
the behavior manifests:

1. When the plugin is loaded "on the fly", it stuffs the log with error
messages, mostly uninitialized variable usage. This continues after the
player's screensaver is changed to something else, until I disable the
plugin entirely.

2. When the plugin is disabled, the server crashes. :(

I guess I'll just set aside a weekend to upgrade. Unless, of course,
these error messages ring a bell for someone with a solution (i.e., it's
not the Perl version but something else)?

you can, of course, delete the plugin form the Plugins directory. It will then
no longer be checked or tested in any way, thus no way to cause a crash :)
