View Full Version : Browsing Song Information with some missing mp3 tags

I can see an "album" in the "browse albums" list that shouldn't be there. Browsing the album reveals one mp3 track. Browsing the track reveals the following details:

Title: Biosphere - Endurium
Artist: Electronic Music
Album: Biosphere

This was a bonus track that I downloaded from the internet, and didn't come on an album, so I was suprised to see the artist name in the album details. Looking at the mp3 tags, the tags are set correctly:

Artist: Biosphere
Album:
Title: Endurium
Genre:

The Genre should be ambient, but the tag is missing from the .mp3 file.

What's going on here? It looks like because the tags are blank, SlimServer stores the wrong values for the fields. Should all tracks have something in genre and album?

"Electronic Music" was picked up for the Artist name. I have looked through all V1 and V2 tags for "Electronic Music" and there are no occurances. All I can think of is that some information has been guessed from the path, which is "D:\Documents\Phil\Music\Electronic Music\Biosphere". As I have some tags present, I would expect SlimServer to only use tags, not guess from pathname/filename.

Would it be possible to also list the genre tag in the song info display? I don't think it was listed in the info panel (can't check at the moment because SlimServer is not responding).

I think I've half answered this one already in my question!

Looking through SlimServer prefs, I re-read the section for Guess Tags Format. As the album tag was missing, I guess that SlimServer has tried to guess from the path/filename.

I generally store music in /ARTIST/ALBUM/ with filenames "TRACKNUM TITLE" format. However, when I have tracks that do not belong to an album, I've normally put them in /ARTIST/ with just a "TITLE" for the filename (as there no artist or tracknum tag).

Obviously most of the time, tracks will have full tags, so it won't matter, but out of interest, if I put "/ARTIST/TITLE" followed by "/ARTIST/ALBUM/TRACKNUM TITLE" at the top of my "Guess Tags Format" list, will SlimServer ignore the first entry if it sees a file called eg. "99 Dummy Title" without any tracknum or album tag?

That is the idea. The server will try top down for a match. however, I would
expect that your example would still match /ARTIST/TITLE and so would not make
it to the second. I'd put the more specific pattern first. You can always
turn on d_info in the server settings->debugging, and run a wipe cache to check
exactly how well the server is guessing on certain tracks. Change your music
folder settings if you want to narrow down the number of files so that the log
doesnt spit out more text than you can read.
