Olaf, I'm using the AlienBBC plug-in with SlimServer on Windows XP and, in
addition to the built-in support for MP3, OGG, etc., I'm able to listen to
any Microsoft (WMA/ASF) or Real (RA/RM) stream. With the addition of
AlienBBC, you should have SlimServer access to about 99% of radio broadcasts
available on the Internet. (I recall reading a while back that Microsoft
streams are only supported on the Windows platform. I'm not sure if this is
still true, or whether a workaround is available for Linux, Mac, etc.).
Whereas MP3 streams start playing almost immediately upon selection, the
Microsoft and Real streams usually take a little longer (about 5 to 10
seconds) -- probably because mplayer does a lot of pre-buffering.

Below is an M3U playlist of talk radio stations that I listen to regularly.
As you can see, there is a pretty even mix of MP3, RA, and WMA/ASF streams.
You also notice that there are ASX wrappers referenced directly, so they do
work.

For the BBC stations, you might have more success by using their Real Audio
streams instead. See below for a few examples.

Subject: [slim] Internet Radio - how to establish connection

I spent endless hours last week getting about 24 different (vaguely) local
radio stations hooked up for the Mrs. Experienced, like so many others on
this forum before me, that SlimServer does not appear to support ASX as
advertised: I can only really stream MMS which rules out eg the BBC
channels
which change their wretched MMS URL inside the constant ASX file all the
time. That aside, the other - obvious! - thing that I discovered is that it

really helps to have an open internet connection when trying to stream... ;(

Now here's my question: what change to my configuration do I need to make
to
ensure that SlimServer dials a connection if one is not already present? My

Internet Options are all set to auto-dial, but that appears not to help...
