You're absolutely right. Now that I have useful logs to play with, I
have narrowed the problem down to this:

daemon --user $SLIMSERVER_USER $SLIMSERVER_BIN $SLIMSERVER_ARGS

If I run this without the --user parameter (or with --user root)
everything works beautifully. However, if I attempt to use the default
(or hardcode in --user slimserver), the process runs fine until the
startup script exits...then the process is killed.

To validate this, I removed the return $RETVAL from the script, and sure
enough, the server runs just fine and I can listen to music. As soon as
I ctrl-c the script, the process is killed.

I am diving into the wonderful world of the daemon function in RedHat,
but further suggestions are welcome. Thanks for all your help!

What is the content of /etc/sysconfig/slimserver.conf?
