Mini Me
The new Mac Mini is cool, but what's it really for? Robert X has his suspicions.

On the surface, this looks like a sound analysis. However, there
is one obvious reason why this is either a bad analysis, or
the Apple engineers have seriously missed a key feature.

That key feature for every video player on the market is going
to be multi-channel audio. The Mini only provides a stereo
headphone socket. There's no digital out, except possibly using
the firewire port - but this limits it to a few hardcore movie
watchers for the next few years.

If the Mac Mini is really setup to be a video server, then this
is a major oversight by Apple. Sure, you can get an external USB
audio device to provide this, but that would add cost, and spoil
the design statement.

My Sony Freeview box has a headphone socket that doubles as
an optical digital out. It works very well, and could easily have
been fitted to the Mac Mini. The hardware to support most of this
is probably already in the box - why didn't they bring the
connector out?

Interesting observation. You might want to email him about it. He's
pretty good about responding (at least to general comments) and may
address it in next week's column.

In fact, even if you don't mention it, I'll bet someone will. I look
forward to seeing this addressed next week. Stay tuned.
