Maybe a bit off topic, but here goes.  I built my slimserver box roughly 9 months ago.  SuSE 9.1 with two 250G Maxtor SATA HDs mirrored using SW RAID.  The first of the two died less than a month later.  Thanks to the mirror, nothing was lost and I RMA'd the drive, ultimately restoring the mirror.  Just the other day, I lost the other drive and am running again in an unprotected state (I've got a tar job running trying to copy all to an external usb drive, but it is sooooo sloooow and won't finish for a few more days).  My question is this - am I just really unlucky, did i buy bad drives, or is this par for the course?  What large, reliable drives are others using that they would recommend based on experience?

How well are the drives cooled? I'd look into whether you have a heat
problem that may have caused the drive failures.

My experience is that hard drives are pretty much interchangeable as far
as reliability is concerned. Occasionally a manufacturer will have a
poorly designed generation (witness the IBM Deskstar 75GXP a couple years
ago) that will croak in unusually high numbers, but for the most part I've
found reliability to be a wash.

The odd thing (not really - just human nature, I guess) is that so many
people, based on experiences like yours, will adamantly defend or denounce
a particular brand. Even administrators who install and maintain hundreds
of disk drives from different manufacturers (there are only a handful of
HDD manufacturers worldwide) will use anecdotal information and you'll get
about a dozen opinions from a dozen different people.

It's also possible that you may have experienced a bad manufacturing run
of drives. One thing that some people will do when building RAID arrays
is to avoid building the array using drives from the same manufacturing
run so that a transient manufacturing problem will be less likely to cause
two or more drives to fail in succession.

I lean towards quiet units with better than 1 year warranties. 1 year
warranty drives never warrant my money. Examples:
