View Full Version : Track limit with SlimServer 5.4.0?

I'm evaluating the SlimSever software before I buy a Squeezebox. I'm
having problems when I try to load my entire MP3 collection (125,000+
tracks). Basically it just craps out. SlimServer will still be
running but if I refresh to see what's been loaded it times out and I
never can see anything. If I restart SlimServer it will show nothing
in it's library.

I've been able to sucessfully load each of my four directories
independantly, it's when I create a single folder with shortcuts to
these directories that I start having problems. (And creating a
spanned volume isn't an option right now.)

I'm running Windows XP-sp2 with 512mb of memory.

Any ideas?

-thanks

do you have any shortcuts anywhere in those 4 drives that link back to some
other place in your library? If so, the server will go in circles and not be
able to complete the scan.

since you are windows, you can also watch the scan by running the server from a
dos window. first, stop the service, then run:
c:\program files\slimserver\server\slim.exe --d_info --d_scan

you can then watch the messages fly by as the server scans the drive(s). You can
also change the properties of the dos box to have more lines, so you can have
the option of scrolling back if something goes by too quickly. It would also
help if you were able to try the 4-drive links to a smaller collection, and
gradually make it larger.

You might also want to fire up the Windows Task Manager and keep an eye
on memory consumption during the initial library scan. You may find
overall consumption growing past the 512MB of physical RAM you've got
installed.

My guess is that the server's memory needs are getting into the swap
file and thrashing disc that way, while the slim-server is in the middle
of some heavy disc I/O of it's own. Not the best situation.

The good news is, if this is the case, then bumping up yr RAM to 1GB
will most likely resolve the issue. The better news is that the next
major relase of the slimserver software is being designed such that it
may well alleviate much of the memory consumption issue for large libraries.
