Now it lives happily in a home together with it’s partner SDD without moving parts. Very nice and it seems to be very happy (I hear no complains).

I am happy too as it is absolutely quiet, and the response times are MUCH faster than with my LaCie 2TB Rugged usb3 hdd.

So I would say this upgrade was definitely worth it.

After initial hiccups (LMS config was corrupted and I had to start with an empty config) everything runs really smooth.

I don’t know if it has anything to do with the SDD, but I have the impression that even syncing is faster.

Thanks a lot to everybody maintaining these great products (LMS and piCorePlayer) and to Logitech.

Just one comment. I think it's a bit disingenuous that the company selling this card talks about USB3 and their specs claim 6Gb/s when they must know that RPi only supports USB2.

That said, for a LMS setup USB2 speeds are more than adequate. I recently built a new server with piCorePlayer and an SSD and it's doing a grand job.

I agree completely - but apart from that, this card makes it possible to use internal drives and it fits into the housing - which were the main reasons for me.

I'm told by people who claim to know better than I do that SSDs have two caveats

1. Never defrag them
2. Have a backup because you have finite read/write cycles.

Otherwise I agree with your experience, they are faster and quieter. I'm currently re-ripping my CD collection to a SamsungT5 external USB SSD, which will replace my Western Digital USB HD soon.

Unrelated to this, I've added an external SamsungT5 SSD to my sluggish 5yr old IMac and made it the boot device. It's now back to it's zippy speeds.

Backup is a fundamental concept which has nothing to do with the storage
type...

I would think that if this were a real world concern SSD's wouldn't be the current preferred device type for laptops. I would think a music library on a SSD would have substantially less I/O activity than a PC's system drive. I'd say... NOT AN ISSUE!

It's only write cycles you need to worry about. Just reading from a SSD is completely benign. Since a music server is used overwhelmingly for reading rather than writing (you do listen more often than update the library, I presume), then I'd say an LMS type of use is ideally suited to SSDs - low power and completely silent.

In typical usage today, SSDs will accept quite a lot of writing until they fail. But of course they CAN fail early, so a backup is always a good idea.

In 2016, Germany-based renowned computer magazine c't performed a long-time test about how much data can be written to SSDs before they fail. They used several widely used consumer- and pro-grade models and found that all models exceeded their vendor's claims of their write endurance, which ranged between 60 and 150 TB for these 250GB models. The first model failed after 187 TB written, the last one reached up to more than 9 PB. I wouldn't overthink this too much at all. You should be completely fine with an SSD for this use. Of course, anything can fail at any time if you're unlucky enough. It's electronics, after all.

It's not a question of "if". It's a question of "when" it will fail. That is my moto in regards of both onsite and offsite backups of my music .
