Are there any plugins that will display album art on the squeezbox
graphic display? Or is the album art only useful for the web ui?

Thanks,
- Marc

There is nothig currently. I imagine it would be difficult to covert an album
cover to basically a black and white 16x16 pixel icon. The squeezebox display
does have 32 levels of brightness (not all used), but its a global setting.

That's what I figured. I'm curious -- is that global setting a
hardware, firmware, or slimserver software limitation? (C'mon, #3!)

I was thinking of building a plugin for this, but the display is soooooooo
tiny, it probably wouldn't be recognized on the display. (Try resizing an
album cover down to 16x16 using photoshop and you'll see, it's probably not
very useful)

It just hit me though...perhaps another graphic type, instead of using the
existing ALBUMART or THUMP type image, perhaps a third could be supported by
slim server called ICON or something, and it would just display to the left
of all text if it exists...then you could make your own ICON for every
album, and that would be that.

Might be an idea...hmmmm...

Its most certainly not a software limit. The only software limit in place is
using 4 levels of the 32 for the brightness setting. Whether the hardware is
capable or not, I don't have that information, but it would add a huge amount
of complexity to the display handling. Right now the server only has to send 1
bit per pixel. Add 32 levels of 'grey' and you have 5 bits per pixel. The
firmware would had to have some built in animations or the server would be
spending a lot of time updating the display :)

Actually, I was thinking of making it for the Tivo. Basically, have the
tivo display the albumart of whatever is playing on the slimdevice.
Just have to get around to write it.

The squeezebox really doesnt have the capability to display anything
useful in terms of artwork. In fact I really hope that any sort of
visualisations are a long way down the dev list.

Personally i find any sort of flashing lights distracting when
listening to music (they remind me of big 80's graphic equalizers) .
All the visualisations on iTunes and the rest are impressive for 5
minutes then just become annoying. Very nice to project on the wall
of a club but i dont want it in the corner of my eye when i'm having
dinner (my media server is in the kitchen). and one of the best
things for me about Softsqueeze is that in fullscreen mode it presents
a simple, informative screen about what is playing without being
distracting. My only requests would be for blue text rather than
green and smoother text.

Bah. Humbug.

That would be too cool. How would you "browse" to the "album art screen" on
the tivo though? Or would slimserver control that automatically across a
telnet session or something? If you write it, I'd love to try it!

this would be great, even just for the now playing screen to show the cover "gray scaled."

..now I guess I need to learn how to write some perl modules huh

I did a prototype, see
http://forums.slimdevices.com/archive/index.php/t-11062.html

Note that the samples are on a flaky web-server; if at first you don't
succeed, reload...
