So I have 2 Options as a Spotify user:

1. LMS server web UI with Spotty plugin
2. Directly within the Spotify app if I pick my SBoxen under "Devices Available"

My *assumption* is that it is just a difference in the UI, and the music signal is routed exactly the same, ie Spotify-Cloud->LMS->MiscMusicHW, and hence Spotify is Spotify, same music quality (or lack thereof according to some Golden Ears, let's leave that out of the discussion :-D), no extra conversions involved.

So it's all about the preferred UI and where you want to keep your Spotify playlists, since they each allow you to store the playlist in a different ecosystem... and I assume it's the same for any music service of choice.

Thanks and Happy 2019!

That's correct. No difference in audio data stream path. Only UX.

IMHO 1.) is more robust, better integrated into the overall LMS
experience, 2.) is more user friendly when you're used to the Spotify UX
(and when it works :-)).

What's awesome about option 1 as well is that you can actually have two separate play queues, one on whatever non-LMS Spotify client you're using and one on LMS. Works a charm to keep the commute tunes on the commute and listen to other stuff at home :)
