I've been though four controller apps so far, but they all keep losing contact with the Squeezebox.

IIRC, no problem using Squeeze Commander 0.9.6.4 on my old Note 4 under Android 5.0.

But it's not happening on my new Note 8/Android 8.

"No player selected".

Edit:
Found Orange Squeezer and it seems tb working a-ok.

No problems here with Orange Squeeze on both Android 8 and 9.

I'm still using Squeezer on Android 8 no problems. There were issues with reconnect after sleep from Android 7 onwards (iirc) but we worked with the Devs and got some fixes in and it's all fine now.

Nowadays Squeeze CTRL is my favourite APP.
Runs on Android 8 without any issues.

Orange Squeeze on my Samsung S8 running Oreo working perfectly for me. Connects instantly, remote is responsive and always remains available with no dropouts.

Squeezer is asking for user name and pss. I've got the port and IP set. The server has no username and password. The scan sees max2play but it doesn't connect. Does anyone have an idea of what is wrong?

If you go to the web interface of the Squeezebox server, does it prompt you
for a password?

Could it be that the server things the access from your phone is from off
its own network, and as such is requiring password protection? There's a
thread on here somewhere regarding the change that was introduced requiring
that.

No, no password to run web interface. My network is working fine. I can access SB server from Chrome over wifi with no issue. The Squeezer app stops at connect and keeps demanding a non-existent user and pss. IP and Port are correct. There is no error message.

One more vote for Orange Squeeze.
