View Full Version : BBC iPlayer "Listen Live" Not Working?

'Morning All,

Haven't made any changes to my system for quite a while, but today I can't get the "Listen Live" on BBC iPlayer to stream any radio at all: the Touch screen gives me a "Problem: Can't Open File for Radio [Whatever]".

Oddly, if I go into the "Listen Live (Non-UK)" option, I can get some radio, or at least the "Owing to Rights Issues....." message.

And, perhaps even odder, if I go to radio channels from the iPlayer that I've saved to my Favorites, they play fine. For assorted reasons I've never saved the various channels that carry Test Match Special, usually accessing them direct via the iPlayer: but, today, nothing....

I can get the TMS strean on my laptop via the R5 Sports webpage.

Any ideas?

What version of BBC iPlayer plugin ?
What setting to play Live stream ?

I'm non-uk and Listen Live works OK for so it seems like an issue specific to you or your locale ( streaming is organised into regions).

"Can't Open file for" - is unusual for Touch as BBC uses AAC and Touch can play and "Radio" should not appear on that message.
"owing to Rights" - that can occur on a UK only podcast but not live stream.

I wouldn't trust Favorites saved from BBC Iplayer as BBC URLs are dynamic and not a static value. Are these MP3 stream or HLS/DASH ?

I suggest reboot everything including router - just to clear out any possble cached errors.

I'll get back to you on the rest later, but a couple of quick points:
- The "Owing to Rights" is quite common on live sports commentary streams (so, if out of UK, you need to VPN into the UK-only stream)
- Oddly, my saved BBC Favorites have been unchanged for months (and some of them, years...) without any problems at all. I save them into my.SB.com, so that I get the same list on any device or any version of LMS.

I can't reboot until after lunch, so I'll report back then!

You're right but your title implied any Live BBC stream

If they are BBC MP3 stream then yes you should have no problem or possible an "iplay:" live URL but user can save other URLs from BBC iPlayer plugin which will work for a while and then stop - so more info is always helpful (e.g. give the URL you are using )

Quick update pre-reboots etc etc.

- I'm on an old iPlayer version: 1.3.1 Alpha3. I guess I ought to update.....
- Going into LMS Settings, Plugins, I see at the top of the list of plugins: "Bad repository http://bpaplugins.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/repo-short.xml - 404 Not Found". That looks not right?
- My Live Stream is (and always has been): HLS>MP3>FlashAAC>FlashMP3 , as is my On Demand

More later......

That version barely worked on Windows when it came out - I'm v. surprised you heard anything.
If you only listen to Live streams - would the MP3 stream of the Logitech BBC App be adequate ? It may not be if you want to listen say country cricket.

The googlecode URL has been out of date for abotu 2 years. This is the latest version but I'm not sure about running LMS 7.7 - should eb OK

OK - still no Listen Live.

I've rebooted everything. I've updated BBC iPlayer to 1.5.3, with that new repository setting you gave me.

I'm connecting to the net in France, but using a VPN into the UK. I can get live access to most BBC region-restricted sites and streams via LMS (+ net access to the TV iPlayer).

Currently I'm listening to R4 LW (TMS - a real thriller today!) via the Logitech internal BBC:

http://open.live.bbc.co.uk/mediaselector/5/select/mediaset/http-icy-mp3-a/format/pls/proto/http/vpid/bbc_radio_fourlw.pls

Try to go BBC iPlayer>Listen Live>BBC Radio 4 LW and I get nothing except this message on the Touch screen: "Problem: Can't Open File For: BBC R4 LW". LMS shows this as the attepted stream:

hls=http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/hls/uk/sbr_high/ak/bbc_radio_fourlw.m3u8&dash=http://a.files.bbci.co.uk/media/live/manifesto/audio/simulcast/dash/uk/dash_full/ak/bbc_radio_fourlw.mpd&icon=http://radio-service-information.api.bbci.co.uk/logos/bbc_radio_fourlw/600x600.png&onair=bbc_radio_fourlw

Likewise no access for any other BBC live stream via the iPlayer.

What else can I try?

One user of VPNs last week had to update their VPN as BBC blocked it so just consider this as a possibility. That said it shouldn't affect non-uk stations. MP3 are considered non-UK

The "Can't Open file for" is unusual whgen playing on a Touch as there should be no transcoding needed.

Mkae sure BBCiPlayer plugin Live and On-demand Preference Setting is "DASH > HLS > MP3 > Flashaac"

1. On WebUI Setting/Advanced/Logging enable player.source to INFO.
2. Note time.
3. Try to play a BBC Live non-UK station
4. After error message - clear Playlist
5. Note time.
6. Copy ALL message between times notes in Step 2 & 5, save in a text file (e.g. Open Wordpad not Notepad and use copy & paste), zip and attach to a post.

edit:

One of the bonus of using DASH is that like BBC web site - you can rewind "live" broadcast back up to about 3 hours.

Thanks - will try all that tomorrow morning, and report back. But many thanks for your time and suggestions so far. BTW, I've just replicated the same Touch fault message on a Radio too.

If it happens for Touch then all players will be affected.

The LMS WebUI Setting/Plugin page does show the plugin "active" and version 1.5.3
There are no problem with plugin setting ?
When you try to play a station do any logo or station picture appear (they are processed independent of audio) ?
I'm curious to get an idea whether plugin has installed OK.

Yes - Active
Plugin Settings all seem correct (according to what you've said earlier in the thread, and they are not things I ever mess with after installation)
Yes - I get the station logo / picture overlaid with the error message each time I hit Play

The log was good. It tells me that new plugin is installed but uis try to play HLS format.

Can you check the change that BBCiPlayer Setting "Live Preference" setting is "DASH > HLS > MP3> Flashacc" ?

Ahh - my apologies. It's set as HLS>MP3>FlashAAC>FlashMP3 as is On Demand Stream Preference [I guess it installed with those settings?]

And just below that is 2 x Use Highest Bitrate Setting Dash Stream.

So, I should change one (? or both ?) of the first settings to "DASH > HLS > MP3> Flashacc" ?

Yes please change both to use DASH first. I can't debug HLS streams as I have no reference player and I wrote the DASH stuff so I know the what its logging looks like..

So, I shall have time later today to go through all this thoroughly. But a question before I get too far, about Logging. Under LOGGING> PLEASE SELECT LOG SET which option should I choose?

And, I've updated the LMS Server itself to the latest public version.

Cheers

If there are significant errors, the plugin will produce error mesages in the log file without any additional changes.

To get the plugin to produce additional info, you set the log control plugin.bbciplayer and plugin.bbciplayer.dash to INFO. The player.source can be left at ERROR as log levels are reset on LMS restart.

Looking at previous occurances of this error and some (not all) users had an ISP / VPN root cause.

Unfortunately, the next 1-2days is v. busy for me and I probbaly won't be able to get on the forum until late Weds.

Hey, no problem! You are quite generous enough with your time anyway! I'll come at the problems several ways today, and log them all. Today is a good day, as assorted access routes to the Radio4 LW stream will be region-restricted, as it's live sports commentary. So I can try VPN / not VPN; and all the different paths into the commentary (via a net browser, via the LMS BBC app, via the iPlayer, both UK and non-UK. We'll crack it!

The baseline to get working is a live non UK playing "normal" programs (e.g. R2 or R3) using DASH. Once that is working then problems brought by restrictions/geo locking can be isolated.

To check whether problem is LMS or network. You can test BBC DASH stream using BBC Web pages as long as browser is setup NOT to use Flash - see http://www.bbc.co.uk/html5 . When BBC web pages are setup to use HTML5 they are using DASH for video and audio.

Use a Browser (I prefer Firefox/Chrome - not sure about MS ones or Safari) on same PC as LMS and try playing BBC Web page live radio audio using HTML5 - the plugin should work exactly the same with same restrictions as its DASH code runs in LMS.

OK.... No reply expected to this as you're busy, but this is the first set of results, using browser access rather then LMS (which I'll do this afternoon).

Using Firefox, from same laptop where LMS is installed, and with Flash DISABLED in F'fox options. And I'm sitting in Paris.

A) Direct access, no VPN.
Radio 4 FM stream works fine; R3 Stream works fine.
R5 Live Sports Extra (Live cricket commentary: https://www.bbc.com/sport/live/cricket/43878000) - Silence and an error message. I'm assuming there's a region restriction.

B) NordVPN connection to UK server
R4 FM stream works fine; R3 Stream works fine
R5 Live Sports Extra (Live cricket commentary: https://www.bbc.com/sport/live/cricket/43878000) - works fine [So, it thinks I'm in the UK].
I also tried assorted websites on the BBC that have strict region restrictions [eg, the TV iPlayer] and they all worked fine under the VPN.

[There's no net access to R4 LW, which is also carrying the cricket, so I can't check that out here, as I will be able to do via LMS.]

So, the VPN is not causing me a problem via laptop net access, so far as I can tell.

[An aside for cricket fans: this year, for non-UK residents, the BBC have also provided access to the TMS Live Commentary via a YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3VfC8Y6nsVY which is very nice of them! For me, I can access that with no VPN, but *with* the VPN, I'm blocked, as it's strictly non-UK.....]

OK, here's what I tried today (and again, I know you are busy for a few days!). With Log attached.

This is all LMS, on the same laptop from which I tried the net streams referred to in the previous post. I'm in Paris, and tired various options both with and without a VPN.

A) First a regular R4FM stream, without any of the sports commentary regional restrictions
- using NordVPN: works on the LMS BBC app and on iPlayer <Listen Live>.
- using NordVPN: Did not work on iPlayer <Listen Live (Non-UK)>: "Can't Find File".

- without any VPN: works on the LMS BBC app, and on iPlayer <Listen Live (Non-UK)>
- without any VPN: Did not work on iPlayer <Listen Live>: "Can't Find File".

So, that seems all as expected.

B) Second, trying the region-restricted sports commentaries on R4LW
- using NordVPN: LMS BBC App worked for R4LW
- using NordVPN: iPlayer was either silent with a "File Not Found" message (<Listen Live>) or Rights Restriction Audio Message (<Listen Live (Non-UK)>)

- without any VPN: LMS BBC App had Rights Restriction Audio Message
- without any VPN: iPlayer was either silent with a "File Not Found" message (<Listen Live>) or Rights Restriction Audio Message (<Listen Live (Non-UK)>)

So, only the LMS BBC App worked, and only using a VPN.

Hope that's clear!!!!!

Cheers.

It looks like the BBC can detect your VPN as a known VPN and is blocking it. The plugin is making a standard HTTP request sent over PC network interface - and BBC's CDN Akamai is rejecting it. The plugin can do nothing about this.

What I cannot understand is that you say from same PC using same network interface using BBC Browser radio - you can play the DASH UK streams (i.e. R4LW TMS). I need to find a restricted broadcast over the next few days and devise a test.

As a sanity check - the audio chunks are timestamped so 240102824 is for 11 September 2018 09:27:53 GMT. This chunk is logged by LMS at 18-09-11 11:28:27.2362 - are you in Central European Summer time (GMT+2) ?

Just for the moment on the Sanity Check issue, yes, I am in Paris, France.

On the other issues: that's my basic puzzle. Using the VPN I can usually get 'net access to assorted BBC streams, even when region-restricted. But I can't do so via LMS and its assorted apps. On verra ("We shall see", as we say here in France...).

Again, **thank you** for your time: this is an astonishingly generous community.

And, just to follow up on something specific that I'd said earlier:

"B) Second, trying the region-restricted sports commentaries on R4LW
- using NordVPN: LMS BBC App worked for R4LW"

I did that several times, keeping careful notes! With the NordVPN active, there was a route to an region-restricted BBC sports stream, via LMS's own app. But *not* via the iPlayer Squeezebox App. In a sense, no big deal. I could nevertheless get - from non-UK - region-restricted sports stuff via LMS' own BBC App, or via their generous YouTube feed. But I've been a Triode BBC iPlayer guy from way back when.... And that's what I thought would work (but didn't)

Cheers,

I understand that you tried the LMS BBC App which is MP3 but without trying both DASH non-UK stream and DASH UK stream to be compared - I cannot characterise the problem. The plugin works for many others - so your issue seems to be something to do with VPN. The fact that MP3 stream plays OK is interesting but it is streamed through Shoutcast whereas the DASH stream are provided by CDN akamai or Limelight networks and one of the possible next step woiuld be to see if different CDNs behave differently with the VPN.

I noticed this article yesterday:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-45499784

There is a slightly worrying use of the term compression towards the end of the article.

The same effect is apparent on BBC iPlayer Radio Live Streams when the time signal pips are heard about 35 - 40 seconds after the same on Live FM Radio. (Here in the UK).

Let's hope they don't try to cure this with "compression" too.

Edit: Further reading here refers also to audio streaming and dispels some of my concern:

This is way off topic - so no need to continue beyond this post.
LIve streams over data networks have lots of problems that can only be mitigated never eliminated - and comparing a multi hop data broadcast to a single hop broadcast (even satellite) will always show these problems - I beleiev one of the current solution actually every so often is to chop a bit of audio out of data stream to catch up to realtime.

As you noted above, it's difficult to reproduce the "fault" without ready access to know region-restricted streams. But to at least bed down when I am so far, I did a systematic run though of all my ways of accessing Beeb radio via LMS, both with and without VPN, using R3 as the test bed. I also checked beforehand that this laptop, sitting in Paris, can get direct website access to almost all BBC TV and radio with the VPN active, and a lot of it without the VPN. But, without the VPN, region restrictions - particularly on TV stuff, do kick in.

Anyway here - at some length! - is what I found. I'll post a separate message with the assorted error logs relating to this test series.

So, via my LMS setup I have 5 ways of trying to get R3 streams, and I can also try each of the 5 ways with and without the VPN.

And here are the error logs relating to the iPlayer efforts above.

Logs show the VPN is being blocked by BBC. The plugin works OK when playing a non UK stream. For completeness you could try the alternate CDN Limelight instead of akamai via the "listen Live alt CDN" menu.

The log also show very poor performance of the playing BBC link with many packets taking between 1-2 secs from BBC to player which should be about 100-200ms.

Thanks for taking the time for looking at it all! Puzzling. Two things:

- The VPN being blocked is odd (reminder: I use NordVPN; I'll try and test a different one in due course). Simultaneously with running the VPN-enabled radio tests, I was downloading the latest Bodyguard TV episode via the BBC online iPlayer app! Odd to think that genteel R3 is fussier than the money-hungry TV folks!

- I don't understand the CDN thing.... Can you let me know exactly what I am looking for, and where?

Cheers from Paris,

I'm puzzled too - what I needed to confirm that the plugin itself was working under normal conditions. So the issues is somehow related to thetype of VPN. I wonder whether the VPN "knows" about BBCiPlayer app and WebUI (e.g. via the Http UserAgent headers) and takes special measures. I'm looking around to see if other info about NordVPN.

CDN - Content Delivery Network. BBC don't own or run the many servers which needed to stream the data - they subcontract them to two CDNs: Akamai and Limelight Networks. When starting to playing a Live or Listen Again the BBC top level URL returns a choice of two URLs - an Akamai service or a Limelight service. BBCiPlayer plugin default chooses Akamai but in the main BBC Iplayer menu, at the bottom there are "alt CDN" menus which chooses Limelight.

I'm not seeing that option in the LMS BBC iPlayer menus

I wonder if this was a tweak done in 1.5.4. Anyhow you should upgrade to V1.6.0 (available last night) to fix latest BBC problem which broke "Listen Again".

Not the Settings - the normal Home/Radio/BBCiPlayer menu whose top two entries are "Listen Live" and "Listen Live (non-UK)" - the last tthree entries are "Listen Live alt CDN" and "Listen Live (non-UK) alt CDN" and "Listen Live MP3"

OK - thanks, as ever.

An oddity: LMS > SETTINGS > PLUGINS

has something I have never seen before. Right down at the bottom of the page, between the last of the unchecked OTHER THIRD PARTY PLUGINS and UPDATE PLUGINS are two new lines,

bpa - BBCiPlayer with BBC DASH support

bpa's iHeart Radio Plugins Short

with an ENABLE button. I hit that and, going back to the LMS iPlayer menus, the alt CDN options have appeared!

Anyway, I'll find time to run and log some tests later today. And I'll of course check that the original "fault" is still there before trying the altCDN route.....

That is the automagic update process. You should be on V1.6.0 now. No core difference between 1.5.* anbd 1.6.*. I am inbvestigating how nordVPN uses DNS - it seems it requires DNS requests to go to its VPN DNS server and I need to check LMS DNS handling.

What is odd is the OP is able to use BBCiPlayer TV so perhaps behind the scene the iPlayer tries both CDNs and goes with the one that works - only way to prove that would be to examine network traffic which is too hard to describe remotely.

Hello,

Thank you for your letter.

If you are still unable to access it, please try to do the following:

Check if your location services are disabled (GPS, etc.);
Clear your browser's cache completely (even if you tried before);
Disable CyberSec feature (MacOS(OpenVPN)/Windows/Android NordVPN applications only);
Connect to any UK server;
Use the Incognito mode of your browser (optional);
If the issue persists, please try using a different browser.

Could you tell us what IP address are you seeing at http://whatismyv6.com/ whilst connected to any of our servers as well as attach a screenshot taken at https://ipleak.net (WebRTC and DNS sections) for us?

These two will help us identify whether there are any issues with your connection.

Let us know if you have further questions.

Most of the suggestion are irrelevant as NpordVPN thinkyou are using a browser.

Tell them you are using a dedicated DASH media player. No cache, no incognito mode, no location active, no cybersec stuff.
DNS is same as PC. No webRTC. Do their request for IP address and ipleak.net

DNS is same as PC. No webRTC. Do their request for IP address and ipleak.net

A bit of a poor follow-up response from NordVPN:

My apologies - I wasn't clear about something. I'm /*not*/ using a
browser, but rather a dedicated DASH media player. No cache, no
incognito mode, no location active, no cybersec stuff. If you look
again at the two feeds I sent you, it looks to me as if the BBC's
<Limelight> provided feed ("llnw" in the URL) is being allowed through
NordVPN, while the <Akamai> ("ak" in the URL) feed is being selectively
blocked.

NordVPN
Thank you for the reply.

For the time being, we are experiencing some technical difficulties with the BBC streaming itself, you might not be able to access it at this time.

Regarding a specific type of media player, please try re-installing it as that will force its cache to be cleared. See if that helps.

Let us know how it goes!
