View Full Version : piCorePlayer or Max2Play - comparison?

Hi

I hope I don’t start a flame war now…

I am using piCorePlayer as LMS server which works fine (including own access point), but I am thinking: what would I gain, by using Max2Play? I know that one major advantage of Max2Play is, that I can run additional programs (from home automation to print server) on my pi, and I see the big advantage of pCP of being able to just pull the plug without having to worry about corruption of the installation. But is there anything else I would gain?

Rephrased: what are the advantages and disadvantages of these two systems, if I only am talking about LMS player and server usage (incl. streaming services, samba, own access point, …)?

Setup:
* pi (I 2 if I am not mistaken),
* external hdd
* LMS database on external hdd

I will start with important points for me:

pCp:

+ running in memory
+ runs very robust (no comparison here)

- customisation more difficult and limited as running in memory
- can be (but usually not) a little tricky to setup

Max2Play:
no idea - what are the plus and minus?

Are there speed differences?

Thanks,

Rainer

Hi

I hope I don’t start a flame war now…

Well I don't think that will happen :confused::p

but why not spring for the €10 (which will give you full access) and find out for yourself :rolleyes:

Hi Rainer,

You can also download (https://www.max2play.com/en/max2play-image/) our image for free and check our Plugin Library (https://www.max2play.com/en/addons/). Plugins with the Premium flair are only accessible with an active license, all other plugins are free.

IMHO the biggest difference between pCP and m2p is that pCP does one
thing (or two :-)) only, but does them well. Highly optimized, but
difficult to customize. Whereas m2p is a generic Linux system with some
customized packaging and UX to address a given use case, without
limiting itself to that use-case.

If you want a super easy to set up and stable SB replacement or LMS:
pick pCP.

If you want a SB replacement and/or LMS, and add more services (media or
not) to the same system, go with m2p.

In any case: get another SD card (or just re-use the one you have) and
give the other choice some playing.

For SB replacement I would use pCP only. A machine will not perform anything and everything and stay in perfect sync at the same time. Plus if you install packages that use Alsa they might impact how the player works. Player role is rather specialised.

To run LMS, the story is entirely different. The only area where LMS needs special attention (on linux) is when you want to run it on something like a router; Making it listen/reply only on the interface you want is not as straightforward as you might think, at least in my experience.
Other than that, you can have a machine perform a lot of server tasks and still be a perfect LMS server. So m2p would be fine in this case I assume.
Also, while I understand why people are using LMS off pcp, I find that a bit anti-climactic, since pcp is designed to run in RAM while LMS expects access to mass-storage and a database. So you end up using pcp with permanent mounts and a backing store for preferences/DB on LMS and then it doesn't handle power events much better than any regular OS anymore.

My 2cts.

I agree. I have run LMS on a LMS only pCp with NFS mount to my QNAP but found that my SB3s would often show “unable to connect to server”. I put it down to the 100mb shared bus of the LAN on the Pi being a bit temperamental so switched back to a hacked VB2.4 installed on an SSD in a 16gb Ram HP Microserver with NFS mount to the QNAP. It performs much better with massively faster scan times and has the added benefit of CD ripping and Plex.
However I run 4 players on Pi’s installed with pCp and a variety of HAT DAC and one with touchscreen.
As players they are rock solid. I have experienced only one occasion when the SD card got corrupted but that was down to me fiddling.
I have tried max2play but have no need for the other stuff it includes so my vote goes to pCp

Edit. Just realised it’s 5 pCp based players. I have one at a remote site with a pair of decent active usb speakers

I’ve been using pCp for a couple of years and it worked fine with an RPi2/Hifiberry Digi+ and LCD screen. I built a new system and case with a RPi3/Sabre ES9038 DAC and want an OLED to take over what the LCD did.
I would like to know how Max2Play compares to piCorePlayer when a Linux novice wants to implement an OLED screen for LMS stream data. I tried to install LMSmonitor in pCp for an i2c sh1106 OLED display to do this, but it doesn’t work and getting help is hard. Would the paid Max2Play license be able to connect the OLED out of the box or have better support to pull this off?

I've only used Max2play but for someone with absolutely no Linux knowledge found the website "how to" videos really helpful and the web interface / plugins intuitive.
Emboldened by my first success of building a replacement SB I've gone on since to add another with Iqaudio DAC/amp and then a Touchscreen with Jivelite for the kitchen to act as a central controller. :cool:

I agree with that. The Max2Play set up is pretty much idiot proof, and I'm an idiot.

@MikeG and Fahzz:
I love your feedback and would like to add it our testimonial slider on our website if I have your permission :D

As a player, I'd stick with PiCorePlayer over Max2Play. As a LMS server, well, I'd get that off the Pi anyway. So my vote is for PcP.
