View Full Version : Mac OS, Squeezelite, Radio Paradise flac problem

At the weekend I spent most of my time struggling with a Mac Mini running Yosemite.

I installed LMS (the latest v7.9.1 nightly) and used it to control a pi, SBTouch, Boom and SBRadio.

Radio Paradise flac played through them all.

I then installed the “Local Player” plug-in and configured the Mini output for the USB dac I wished to use (NorthStar Essensio).

I tested the output with the BBC Radio Player and the dac played every channel I tried without a problem.

I switched to LMS, selected Squeezelite, configured the output and tried a few different streams.

Radio Paradise 320 stream was OK and so were the BBC live streams.

FIP and JB-Radio2 would not play on the NorthStar but would play on the SBT, Boom, etc.

The Radio Paradise flac also refused to play on the Northstar.

This morning I tried to repeat the exercise on a MacBookPro (13” Mid 2012) running El Capitan (v10.11.6).

Used a different dac, (iFi, 24397by AMR, HD USB Audio).

Same result, Radio stations played on a SBRadio but not via the USB Dac.

Is it a Squeezelite problem?

I would like to install Ralphy’s latest Squeezelite but would need somebody to give me a “how to”.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ronnie

I hope the attached file is sufficient.

Just to add that if I go to the respective Radio Station web pages (JB-R2,fip,BBC) that the streams play through the default USB dac.

I have tried playing through Squeezelite using the MacBookPro internal speakers and Spotify works, the BBC Listen live streams work and so does Radio Paradise 320 stream.

JB-R2 and fip do not work.

A line from the log states

2018-01-15 11:39:26.334 squeezelite-osx-i386[234:1970] 11:39:26.322 WARNING: 140: This application, or a library it uses, is using the deprecated Carbon Component Manager for hosting Audio Units. so I'm thinkink it's a Squeezelite thing.

I reported this a while back: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?108189-Announce-Radio-Paradise-Lossless-Streaming-(Plugin-v2) (post 10).

Squeezelite still doesn't work for me but my hardware players are fine now so I just use Squeezeplay on the Mac.

Thanks for the reply Chris.

I did see your report of the problem when I did some searching, I also noted that it did not seem to be resolved.

Are you using the "Local Player" plug-in or have you installed Squeezelite on the Mac?

I see that you have the same failure line in your log as is in mine.

I don't know why it won't open the JB-R2 and fip files as they are mp3.

Yesterday I managed to install "lame" on the MacBookPro but it made no difference.

Do you have a link that will instruct me how to install Squeezelite on the Mac?

I would find that really helpful.:)

Ronnie.

I odn't know anything about MacOS and RP flac stream but the main difference between Squeezelite and Local Player is the "direct local file access" setting. Try unsetting it and see if it makes a difference for RP playback.

Ronnie

I'm using 'Local Player'. I didn't think there was a Squeezelite standalone installation but I might be wrong.

BPA

Can you tell me where the 'direct local access' setting is please?

I have a similar set-up on a Windows 10 laptop and the "Local Player" plays through the internal default speakers without a problem, Radio Paradise flac, JB-R2 and fip all work.

I'll try the usb connection on the Windows 10 later today if I get time.

Chris, it's on the "Local Player" Settings page, the last line has a tick box.

Ronnie

Ralphy has a Squeezelite for Mac OS but the install instructions are scattered all over the web and all assume more knowledge than this "bear of little brain" has :(:p

There's a standard mac dmg package for the latest release (https://sourceforge.net/projects/lmsclients/files/squeezelite/osx/intel/) just drag it to the Applications folder and this post (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?97046-Announce-Squeezelite-a-small-headless-squeezeplay-emulator-for-linux-(alsa-only)&p=902615&viewfull=1#post902615) explains how to have squeezelite start at boot and change the default output device.

Hope that helps.

Thanks bpa, but it makes no difference

LMS couldn't create command usually means there no applicable rules to create a compaitble stream - this may be related to output device capbilities.

Enable logging player.source to INFO to get a bit more detail.

It does Ralphy, it does:) (your my first "new best friend" for 2018)

Two paracetamol, a lot of head scratching (where the nuisance is the delete key?). I don't know my way round a Mac at all:o.

Anyway I now have the MacBookPro "Built-in Audio" playing Radio Paradise flac, fip (hurrah;)) and JB-R2, plus "the usual suspects":p.

If I recover enough, later today I might give the Mac-Mini with the usb dac a shot (or wait until Thursday).

I don't think you'll regret switching to Mac Ronnie. The great man himself (M Herger) is a Mac user so you'll never feel disadvantaged with LMS etc.

The 'delete key' is Fn + Backspace by the way ...

All the best.

Here you are bpa, I thought I would try your suggestion.

I started BBC Radio 2 and then switched to Radio Paradise flac

I do have it working sort of properly on the Mac-Mini but after about 90 minutes the RP flac begins to go all warbley and the stream stammers and begins to break up a bit.
If I switch to another streaming station the condition remains.
I can restart LMS and that does not make any difference, a restart of the computer clears it.
I'm going to carry on testing
Learning by doing :)

The above indicates there is something going on with trasncoding but if you can play - then this is no longer the issue. A more detailed log (player.source set to DEBUG) would show what is going on but since it plays - I don't think it will change things.

"warbley" - can you characterise it a bit better ?
Stream bit slow
Stream bit fast
two streams interleaved ?
chunk of audio being dropped or swapped mid stream so audio is single stream but a bit jumbled ?

If "warbley" remains on next station then it sounds like a player issue - it has told LMS it is capable of a certain stream but there is some incompatibility - player.source at DEBUG level will show what format is being chosen for player.
