View Full Version : (uk) DAB on SqueezeBox?

Is there any actual advantage to DAB given:

- you can stream any of the DAB stations, given you've got broadband

How can you stream DAB stations without a dedicated decoder somewhere in the line between slimserver and squeezebox?

- the streaming quality is likely to be better than DAB given the
predilection of the BBC in particular for squeezing extra stations into the
available bandwidth at the expense of quality

Can't argue with the latter half of that statement given that their Freeview broadcasts are often of such poor quality that a switch back to the analogue original is always the best option. But I'd like to know how their current Real-based playback can give better quality playback compared to DAB.

- many areas of the UK still don't have DAB

True

- If its just BBC you're after you can get a Sagem free-to-air receiver with
audio out that'll give better quality than DAB

A moot point since either a DAB or Free-2-Air decoder still requires a separate input to your HiFi sytstem. So far, AFAIK, only the Windows platform can integrate the PSION DAB Wavefinder with Slimserver. Nothing yet for Mac or other UNIX platforms.

Just my 2p!

Cheers

Based on my own listening I'd say Freeview/Satellite offers the best
quality, followed by DAB, followed some way behind by net streaming.
The online streaming did get good for a while but the bitrates were
really low last time I tried and the artefacts were horrible (48k
wma?).

The Modular Technology PCI card and some other USB solutions WERE
available and would all work with DABBAR. However, AFAIK none are
currently on sale as there are no working drivers for XP SP2.

I'm looking for the same myself but via a Windows PC and have yet to
come up with anything. The Nebula DTT card i've got will eventually
allow recording and playback over via Slimserver which would be
halfway there (would give the wife the Archers on demand) but at the
moment the files need conversion to playback via Slim.

Alien BBC for the would be the immediate solution for me
