View Full Version : SqueezeBox player (not controller) for Windows 10

I picked up an inexpensive Windows 10 system (just over $200 with a tiny wireless keyboard). This has an Intel processor so I can run any Windows 10 software on it. I have it hooked up to my home theatre using HDMI, so it can play anything up to 7.1 channels 192 kHz 24 bit. I have tested it with foobar2000 for audio and used the built in video player and it all works very nicely.

But what I'm looking for now is a good audio player (not controller) that will connect to my local LMS and allow me to play anything. foobar2000 works nicely, but the UPNP browser component (foo_upnp) is pretty plain (OK, very plain). Since I will only be playing music on this system I don't need all the fancy stuff in foobar2000. I'd like to find something that works similar to my Touch, but on Windows 10.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Mike

Yep, SqueezePlay works well for me. I use it on my Surface 4 (comes with Win10). It's in the Mediafire builds.

The interface is not what you'd call comparable to Android or iOs tools, and essentially replicates the Controller. But it works well on Win 10, supports touch screen functionality.

Or JiveLite. Both look just like a Touch.

Thanks go out to Nomen and Ron.

SqueezePlay works well and seems to do most of what I need. It doesn't seem to work well if the PC is in tablet mode, but in normal mode it works well.

Of course, it can only serve up what LMS makes available, so any surround music is clipped back to just L&R. But most of my surround music also has a stereo copy, so this isn't the worst problem in the world.

Thanks,
Mike

There is this app as well,

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?106060-Annouce-Squeeze-Control-is-now-available-as-a-UWP-app-for-Windows-10

I have it on a windows 8 phone and also on an android tablet.

I have not yet tried it in W10 (I lie, apparently I have it on a cheap Linx tablet :o:confused:)

I concur that there are some issues running in Tablet mode but it is fine in "normal" mode on my Linx - the onboard sound is naff but it is Ok with a USB sound card.

Again, that's a Controller, not a Player.

Look at something like this/bluetooth

why not a raspberry pi and dac hat?

if your in the UK an O2 joggler with squeezeplay and Triode's edo into a cheap usb dac (a bit of software hacking needed).

Some of the software controller solutions also have playback (often an in app purchase)

A link to your

might give people more ideas, also your location might help as well.

If the LMS is on your bargain buy why not install the Local Player plugin and use a usb outlet into a dac or usb/spdif converter

The Local player plugin has worked well for me.

You're right, sorry. It works for me because I also have Squeezelite installed on that PC.

Often wondered. What's the difference between Jivelite + Squeezelite and Squeezeplay ? Isn't Squeezeplay a GUI for an in built instance of Squeezelite ?

Remember the Squeezeplay OS for Joggler will play through the local speakers with no Squeezelite.

I am talking about the Windows or Mac programs Ronnie not the OS.

Squeezelite is a software player.
Jivelite is the controller software and GUI.
Squeezeplay is the two above combined.

That's what I thought but have seen people recommend Jivelite + Squeezelite over Squeezeplay on grounds of audio quality. Any substance to that ?

It's a PIPO X9. That's a complete Intel x86 touch computer with a 9" screen for just over $200 Canadian. It connect via HDMI, so I can use it to send any audio/video to my home theatre. Once you nuke the useless Android install and get back the wasted disk space, it works very well.

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01C8XMF6I/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Given that, I can play music and video very well. With things like foobar2000 I can even play surround music. But foobar2000 doesn't have much of a touch interface like SqueezePlay, but it also isn't restricted to stereo.

So, I'm looking for something with a nice touch interface that will allow me to browse my music library (LMS, Asset UPNP or foo_upnp) and play back lossless music (gapless is required). SqueezePlay does most of that but won't play surround sound.

Is there not a 'phone app for the foobar?

Would something like Plex/Kodi be suitable?

Here are some forum links to same/similar product, just general info.

The foobar2000 Mobile app works, but it's also limited to stereo. If you select a surround (5.1) track, it briefly puts up a message box complaining about 6 channel audio.

Those are all deprecated!
You should NOT be using them.
