Sorry if this is obvious, but I can't find the answer - if I start an
album, it seems to just play the album over and over. Is there some
setting to get the player to play an album once then stop?

press repeat on your remote until it says "repeat off"

or

check the web interface, make sure the repeat setting says "off", instead of
"one" or "all"

If this is not the problem, then you may have found a bug.

I wouldn't consider it as a bug but the default setting for
squeezeboxes is repeat 'on' whereas I would have expected it to be
'off'.

I'm inclined to say that there is a bug, introduced in 5.4.

I have several times tried to go to the next item by pressing the
Forward key. It always goes to the start of the current item. The
behaviour was as it was supposed to be in 5.3, but has changed in 5.4.

Yes, I have checked that the Squeezebox reports "Repeat off". Where
do I double check this in the Web interface?

I've had no trouble skippign forward myself, but I may not be following what you
are saying here, because I dont see how repeat affects skipping forward.
However, you will find the repeat settings in different places on differet
skins. Default and Fishbone, its located right under the now playing status.

There may well be no relationship. But I had in my mind that if
Repeat was set to "Repeat Song" then the next item (which is how the
Forward button is supposed to work) might be the same item a second
time.

yup, that's the part I missed. Repeat song. I think in my overly tired state,
I figured we were still talking about Repeat Album.

I'd have to look it up, but I think FWD might simply send a command to get the
next song, which from the playist manager perspective would then check the
repeat setting and grab the same song over again. I can envision arguments for
both sides as to which takes priority (fwd button v. repeat setting).
