Are there any options besides mobile apps to replace the Duet-style controllers? Something easily charge-able would be my biggest concern - my phone is charging at home and I don't want to have to unplug it every time I want to play music.

Buy a cheap used older style smart phone with WiFi. Make it your dedicated SB Controller. :)

I've been considering using one of the inexpensive Android tablets to act as a means of displaying our joint calendar in our kitchen. Also as a monitor for the Android app that displays performance statistics for our Solar Panel array on the roof.

I suspect that a Raspberry Pi would be a lot cheaper, if you're technically minded. It all depends if you can find a Raspberry Pi implementation of the Squeezebox Controller.
