The wavpack v4.0 lossless compressor has just been released.

http://www.wavpack.com/

It's very competitive with FLAC in most areas but it still
requires more CPU to decode.

I ran some quick benchmarks against a wide variety of musical
styles and I found that wavpack in its fast mode is roughly
equivalent to flac --best in file size. It encodes about 10x
faster and decodes 1.5x slower on the average than FLAC.

It's been released under a BSD license. The encoder and
decoder are also quite unix-friendly (they are command line
tools that can be part of a pipeline) and ideal for plugging
into the slimserver as a new supported format.

I think there's good potential for this format in the future.

got any ideas on getting tag info from it?
if that idea were to take the form of a CPAN module we'd be all over it ;)
