What is the recommended software client for Mac OS X now? Is SqueezePlay obsolete? TIA

I guess it is squeezelite these days. At the bottom of the Google code page there are OSX builds available for download.
https://code.google.com/p/squeezelite/
(I don't run LMS on OSX but should the Local Player plugin be available, installing that it is probably the best way to procure the squeezelite player.)

Since SqueezeLite is headless on Mac (I run LMS on QNAP/Linux) , does the Mac show up as a Player in LMS then it uses whatever audio output is current on Mac?

Yes, but anyway ....

... I quickly browsed and saw a "1.8" version for squeezelite there. On the other hand the OS X binary on google code, which I downloaded and started up, reports "1.7".

Indeed in december last year (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?98156-Announce-JiveLite-cut-down-squeezebox-control-application&p=801304&viewfull=1#post801304), Ralphy recommended using his files shared on mediafire to get both Squeezelite (player) and Jivelite (UI) working on OS X.
I'd give it a shot.

Are there installation instructions for Squeezelite or can it be run from any folder on Mac? Does it have to be started from command line for can icon be set up? Thanks for help.

I just read the readmes on mediafire and can say yes! To all.
In principle it's started via CLI but you can wrap it in an Automator Script.

In answer to your second question, SqueezePlay is currently working fine for me on my iMac.

I got it from here: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?96328-ANNOUNCE-SqueezePlay-for-Mac-OSX

+1, works fine on my Mac (and FWIW on a Linux/Xubuntu computer also)

From the readme on that mediafire server:

Details:

squeezelite-i386 is built to run on osx release 10.4 and newer.
squeezelite-x86_64 is built to run on osx release 10.6 and newer.
squeezelite universal binary includes the above two files.

Install:

sudo mkdir /opt
sudo tar -C /opt -xvf squeezelite-1.7.1.532-osx-intel.tar.gz

Start at boot:

sudo cp -p /opt/squeezelite/bin/squeezelite.plist /Library/LaunchDaemons

Edit squeezelite settings in /Library/LaunchDaemons/squeezelite.plist if needed.

sudo launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/squeezelite.plist
