it will offer protection but the primary function is to keep the
system up. Personally if my system is down for a few days at home
it's not the end of the world, nor if my restored back up is missing a

In that situation an offsite drive or dvd's is fine. If you're home
server is 'business critical' maybe RAID is appropriate.
