Install Squeezelite on B (a command line player)
Set Squeezelite to start automatically
Control the player either via the web interface or via a smartphone app

Many thanks - that worked!

Two minor things:
1. I found that

squeezelite -o default -n ZoomMint -s 192.168.1.252
played nicely with other sound apps on my system. If another app (e.g. banshee) is playing an audio file it doesn't block squeezelite, their output streams just get mixed.
2. To automatically start squeezelite at session startup, I just added it to the list of startup programs. Saved tampering with rc.local...

It's Linux! Of course it works!

Glad to hear it though :)
